Day 35 opens the combination phase of the combat days. From here the strings get longer, and today's is a hand strike into a kick. Four 15-second intervals - backfist and side kick on the right, side kicks on the right, backfist and side kick on the left, side kicks on the left - three to seven sets, one minute of rest.
A backfist swings the back of the lead hand outward and around toward the target with the elbow leading and then extending - a whipping strike rather than a straight one. Following it immediately with a side kick from the same side gives you a genuine hand-to-foot combination: the backfist opens the line and the kick travels through it. The second interval then strips the hand away and leaves you with side kicks alone, so each side gets the combination and the isolated repetition before the other side takes over.
Let the backfist snap out and back rather than pushing through - the return is what makes it a backfist. Keep your other hand up throughout. On the kicks, chamber, extend, retract, and pivot the standing foot so the hip can open fully.
Hand then foot, and the combat days stop teaching strikes and start teaching sequences.
Make it Harder: Double the backfist before the kick so each rep runs backfist, backfist, side kick.
Make it Easier: Take a beat between the backfist and the kick to reset your stance rather than flowing straight through.
