26 - The Kitten
You make it into the hallway and slam the door and the laughter cuts off like a switch. You spend the rest of the night on a sofa in the empty reception with the lights on, jumping at every creak. In the morning you creep back up to the room and open the door an inch. It is spotless. Bed made, lamp on the table, TV on the wall, not a mark on the carpet. You grab your things without touching anything else and get out.
Your phone has ten missed calls and a text from your friend. His car broke down just outside town. He will meet you at the diner on the main road instead. It is not far so you walk, and it is a nice morning, and you find yourself thinking that maybe, just maybe, the worst is over.
You pass a small park with a pond and a few old trees. From somewhere above you comes a thin little cry. You look up. A kitten, grey and tiny, is stuck on a branch far too high for something that size, hanging on with all four sets of claws and crying its heart out. You know exactly what it feels like to be stuck somewhere high with no way down. You put your things on the grass, reach for the lowest branch and start to climb.
Climb up to the kitten and bring it down. Reach for the branch above, grip and let go, then pull yourself up hand over hand and feel your way out along the branch.
