2 - The Ruins

You made it. You do not know how but you made it. You are crouched behind a broken wall in what used to be an office building, breathing hard and listening for engines. Dust hangs in the air. Papers drift down from a floor that is no longer there. The sky above the hole in the roof is quiet and blue and empty. The spaceship is gone.

So is the street you came from. So is most of the town. You peer over the wall and there is nothing but rubble and smoke as far as you can see. No sirens. No helicopters. No way back home. There is only forward, whatever forward turns out to be.

Then something shifts in the rubble beside you. A hand pushes up through the dust, grey and slow. Then another. All around the ruins the people the aliens shot are getting back up and they are not getting up to help. Their heads hang wrong. Their mouths are open. They are slow but there are a lot of them and they are hungry. One has already got a cold grip around your ankle and is pulling itself towards your leg with its teeth showing. Kick it off. Kick it off and get away!

Kick free and keep the dead off your legs. Swing each leg back to shake off the grip and then kick low and fast to keep them down.
