11 - The Clearing

You crawl out of the swamp on your hands and knees, dripping and stinking and alive, and push through one last wall of reeds into a wide grassy clearing. The helicopter is sitting right in the middle of it with its rotors still turning. Before you can even wave, the doors slide open and men in body armour jump out with rifles and run for the far side of the field.

At the same moment riders burst out of the trees on horseback with guns of their own and the two groups crash into each other. Shots. Shouting. A horse rears. It is like a scene from an action movie and you are standing in the credits with no idea who the good guys are.

You do not wait to find out. You drop low and creep towards the helicopter one careful step at a time while the fight rages around you, holding still whenever someone looks your way, moving again when they look back. The last helicopter man goes down twenty metres away. The cabin is empty. The riders turn their horses towards you. You dive into the pilot seat, duck as a bullet stars the windscreen and start hunting for the ignition. Quick, get this thing started and go, go, go!

Stay low and hold still until the helicopter is yours. Sit back against the wall and hold your position while the fight plays out around you.
