Recon Squad is a full-body conditioning workout that treats the floor like a field - you're never fully upright and never fully at rest. Squat hops, slow climbers, push-ups, and shoulder taps cycle through three triplets, each ending in a 20-count plank hold that functions as both a core drill and a controlled recovery point before the next round of squat hops begins.
The squat hop is the cardiovascular engine here: a lateral hop from a squat position that keeps the hips loaded throughout, demanding continuous quad and glute engagement while the heart rate climbs. Slow climbers follow as a deliberate deceleration - the "slow" is not optional, it's what turns a cardio movement into a hip flexor and core strength drill, requiring each leg to move under control rather than momentum. The second triplet replaces climbers with push-ups, shifting the load to the chest and triceps while the core stays braced in the same position it held for 20 counts at the end of the first triplet. The third triplet swaps push-ups for shoulder taps, narrowing the demand to anti-rotation stability as fatigue accumulates across everything that came before.
On the squat hops, land softly and return to full squat depth before hopping again - a shallow landing followed by an immediate hop is just jumping, and misses the lower-body loading that gives the movement its purpose. On slow climbers, count to two on every step: two counts forward, two counts back.
The squad moves together. The hold is where you find out who's actually there.
Make it harder: Increase the squat hop to a full jump squat, add a push-up to every slow climber at the bottom of the movement, and extend the plank holds to 30 counts.
Make it easier: Replace squat hops with regular squats, perform slow climbers from the knees, and reduce plank holds to 10 counts.
