DAREBEE Workout: What it Works

Mean Abs is a small routine with sharp teeth. It takes two familiar moves (crunches and flutter kicks) and turns them into a grit test by parking you in a 10-count hold right when your abs would love a break. That “pause in the burn” is the point: it trains bracing under fatigue, teaches you to keep ribs down instead of flaring, and makes your deep core do its quiet, unglamorous job of keeping your spine organized. The crunches bias the upper abs through controlled trunk flexion, while the holds force the midline to stay locked without you cheating momentum into the rep.

The second half is where the name earns its reputation. Flutter kicks light up the lower abs and hip flexors, but the hold in the middle turns it into an endurance contract you signed with your past self. Keep the low back gently pressed toward the floor, legs long, neck relaxed, and breathe like you’re trying not to show weakness to the workout. The finisher, back extensions, is the antidote: it brings the posterior chain online (spinal erectors, glutes, upper back) so you build a core that’s not just “front armor” but a full 360-degree support system for posture, running, lifting, and everything else your day throws at you.

Extra Credit: Turn each 10-count hold into a 20-count hold.
