DAREBEE post attack | Updates
It's been almost 24 hours and we are not out of the woods yet we are sorry to say. This is going to be a long weekend and some of us will be taking time off our day jobs so we can throw more manpower at this. Currently all services except the Hive are disabled until further notice. We are still at the damage assessment stage but we will make sure to update you every step of the way. We are currently working in shifts monitoring the website 24/7. This upcoming weekend we will also be discussing the future of DAREBEE, what we can do from here on and what changes will have to be made running it.
Just to let you know what kind of attack this was. This was ransomware. Which means our files were encrypted and the hackers were demanding money from us if we wanted our files back. We have a very extensive backup system in place, something we pay dearly for, monthly. So this kind of thing would not have worked but it did take us offline for almost an hour which is unacceptable. It also highlighted that yes, we are not as safe as we imagined despite all the safety precautions we are taking. The emotional toll this took on the team and our morale also cannot be ignored. Imagine someone breaking into your house. You just don't feel safe there after that for a long time. This is like that for us.
This was a ransomware attack. The goal here was to extort money from the developers aka the DAREBEE team so we could get our files back (which we already have safely stored in multiple places anyway). We can recover the DAREBEE materials after a nuclear strike. Probably.
There are a few bugs in the Hive right now and the website itself but we will address everything in the upcoming week. We had to do a lot of work to get it here and there is even more that needs to be done. Although we have backups of the materials, the functionality itself presented a security concern so everything will have to be looked at, stripped and reworked. We were hoping to have better news for you for October as we were about to open a brand new section on DAREBEE but this will now have to wait (hopefully for not too long).
TL.,DR. version
We are back up and running. If anything happens again in the next 48-72 hours, we will get back up again. We've got this.
P.S. Every time something like this happens, we look for a silver lining. Every time it's an opportunity to reassess and get better. And that's what we intend to do now, however hard and painful it may be. Some things in life are priceless and they are worth every effort.
