WhirlySheWhoMustNotBeNamedFremenSilent WolfbasecampCaptainCanuckJCU - Thank you all! (: LizardFriend95 - I was expecting something abysmal based on the reactions from a few years ago, when the show blew up but, honestly, I think it's a perfectly alright book, nothing too outrageous, nothing outstanding about it. There's a lot to appreciate about it and I think that people who got so outraged either don't remember what it's like being an intensely emotional, anxious, and sometimes depressed teenager (or maybe they had a really happy childhood and puberty or they really can't deal with the topic that the book is tackling, so they have this weird emotional response to it. I'll have to read it until the end, I only have a few chapters left and then I'll let you know what I think then. I did kind of like the 1st season when it came out (and then the rest was just a weird mess that got progressively worse) and I didn't understand the outrage then either. The scene made me sick to my stomach and then it made me cry, and I'm not an easy crier and I really think that they tackled with care. And I know that when you're an adult those schoolyears seem like whatever, there's a whole high scary world outside these institutions, but when you're a kid these institutions are your world.

I really enjoyed the book when I read it (twice) but I’m someone who, as long as I find it interesting, can really like just about any book. I’m so behind on the show and I’ll probably have to start over now. I think I made it about halfway through the third season. I know a lot of the outrage was over the scene and fears of contagion which I get. I personally thought the scene was fine and I cried over it, too. I never thought of it as romanticizing it either.
I also remember seeing something about the tapes and how horrible it was that Hannah did that (I don’t remember everything it said, but I know it had a valid point). I never saw a problem with that either. Obviously it would be different for a real life situation, but for books and tv I thought it was an interesting way to explore the topic.
LizardFriend95 - cool, yea, I guess people need to engage with media and books at a deeper level. Doesn't mean you gotta like everything, I surely don't, but you know, think about it a little bit. I'm glad to find a fellow reader here! (:

Started reading a poetry collection by our poet Srečko Kosovel, titled #Justce. Don't worry, I'm still tackling Dickinson, I just have her packed somewhere deep in the bag because I haven't fully unpacked for my quarantine. (:
