    Day 784

     Challenge:
    - Day 7 Better Abs
     Programmes:
    - Day 7 Ironheart Not today.
    - Day 7 Total Burn

Mastery training. A few drills to start with - walking stance, long stance, walking stance with same hand punch, long stance with opposite punch. Then we went into patterns. Started with pattern 1 to get us warmed up, then on to four a couple of times. Unfortunately, the next one was 8 - my bête noir. I surprised myself and seemed to remember most of it except for the turn at the top. Totally forgot that one and which way to turn, so was a little behind there. The second time wasn't so bad and there was one move that I was rather pleased I didn't screw up. It;s never been a favourite pattern, or even one I have ever felt comfortable doing, so I guess that's on the Study list! After that, rather surprisingly, we did Complex 3 again. In partners, several times, with preliminary demonstrations. We spent almost as much time on that one Complex as we had with the other two last week, but then, it is a tad longer. Still, when there is so much else to work on... But I'd studied up on Complex 3 - well, all of them, really - so I was quite confident doing it. At least that's one thing I can tick off!

If it hadn't been for my Fitbit telling that I hadn't moved for the last hour, I doubt I would have clocked up any steps today! I was just very busy working on other stuff. Managed to work also on the last two hand routines. Wow, that last one is enormous! It's almost like another pattern - only no kicking! So they've made me nervous. Happy, though, with the complexes. Wonder what they'll throw at us tomorrow...

    - Day 5 Better Abs
     Programmes:
    - Day 5 Ironheart
    - Day 5 Total Burn I haven't really been using the rests for this programme yet, but I misread today's workout and did 20 toe-taps each time so by the time I got to the end of a set, I was ready for a bit of a breather!

Okay, so the forecast for today was for 20-40mm rain. But as it was sunny this morning and into early afternoon, I decided to go out for a walk. The eldest and the youngest came with me. It was warmer than expected, about 27 degrees and sticky, so once we were out of the shaded part of the walk, it wasn't the most pleasant. The Lad had rushed the first part so when we got on the homeward run and it was uphill before going down again, he lagged and complained his legs were tired. But he kept at it. We were out for just under an hour, or about 4.5km, and my Fitbit reckoned I went up the equivalent of about 30 flights of stairs!

I don't have any pretty pictures of spring flowers or stark snowscapes, but here are a finger hakea and a (non-native) servicetree.

So much for the deluge. The ancient Roman haruspices were probably better at their forecasts than our Bureau of Meteorology! First, they say, 20-45mm rain, then a couple of days later they change it to 5-15mm. Finally, on the day, they guess 2-5? It was a sunny day, a bit windy, quite dry. Tomorrow, now, again we have 90% chance of a lot of rain. Wonder if it will... Fancy having a job where you can be way wrong most of the time but stay employed.

Argh! Totally forgot about the hand routines. I'd only written out the first four routines, got the last (and longer) two still to do - and to learn them! This weekend, though, I'd better focus on patterns. Yesterday reminded me that I need to know them all, not just the grading pattern, and really, there is no excuse for screwing up the lower patterns! Yesterday, too, the coach said we'd be doing pattern 8, Koryo and Keumgang next week. Now, Koryo is what I'll be grading on, so I've been doing a bit of work on that one, but I've always hated pattern 8 and I'm rubbish at it, so I'd better brush up on that, and I kind of forget about Keumgang because Taebaek is so much more fun.

Taekwondo training. Tonight was rather fun. After a quick spot of relay running, we partnered up for kicking drills - cut kick; hop-hop-cut kick; cut kick, under kick (which is a low turning kick that comes up from under - hence the name!). Phew, that really got the sweat running. Then we lined up in two lines, facing each other and did a round of 10 or so alt leg turning kicks, one-on-one - which means one person kicks and then the other person kicks. All very polite! I was at the end of what turned out to be the moving line while the other line stayed still, so when we changed partners, I had to run down to the other end, and my new partner was about 12 and a foot shorter. With my long legs, I kicked (we were required not to make contact but to almost to) and then stepped back but my partner cringed back. The GM complimented my kicks (first time ever, I think!) with regard to how my reach was scaring my opponent. Then I moved on and eventually faced up against a bloke about my height who is a very good sparrer. I even made him back up a bit, although I wasn't trying because I didn't think we were supposed to, but he was probably just being kind to his elder! The GM said we would do this rather than 20 burpees. Oh, shucks... He kept saying, "One more, one more."

After all that sweaty fun, we non-sparrers (there were only 8 of us left now) moved on to patterns. That was a bit of a hoot! We started at 1 and did it by call twice and then together another two times. Then pattern 2, by call and together. Patterns 3, 4, and 5 weren't too bad (though I think I got confused somewhere in pattern 3 or it could have been 4 - I forget!), but when pattern 6 started...! So we were following someone, and come the second station, he stepped forward with a punch, and after a bit of a pause, we all followed. And then everyone stopped because that was wrong! So we started again, having sorted that out. At the top station, there is a left-handed upper knife block, followed by a left turning kick that results in a 270-degree rotation (yep, just take my word for that!). Well, he used the wrong leg so just had to do a 90-degree turn. There was a bit of discussion, and the coach kept looking at me (in the second row) because he knew I did Poomsae. I did have that bit right. That part of pattern 6, and the earlier similar station, has always given me problems so I've worked it and worked it - I know it now! Anyway, we limped our way up to pattern 7 and did that a few times and then it was home-time.

I think I've finished with the three complexes for a while. I wrote them out today. I hadn't previously because they are...well, complex! Sometimes it's hard to write exactly what you have to do but I think I made a decent fist of it. Everything else is written up in my book, except for Taebaek and higher black belt patterns but I don't need to worry about them. Even though I "graded" on Taebaek last year, I won't really need to grade on it until I go for my third Dan, and that'll be in about four or five years' time. Should have got it good by then!

Didn't have a good night last night so felt like something the cat dragged in for much of the day. Still, worked the three complexes and part of a station of Koryo. Sudden onset of winter today with a temperature of only 18, and a bit wet. A lot of rain and flood forecast for tomorrow. Glad I live on a slope!

I had one of those Impossibles with goldfish. I remember it now, no borders and 5 extra pieces. I also remember completing it but I don't recall where it ended up. Probably somewhere it deserved! Anyway well done and I've added to your March Charge effort. Good luck with the fund raising.

Taekwondo Training. Some Californians (relays) to start off with, then we had to do 20 burpees , with the GM says "Remember when you had to do 5 sets of 20?" Nope, obviously blocked that out! Then we did three-forward-three-back drills. I really enjoy these. Forward was generally a fist block, and back was a knife block. Then the GM started adding things, so on one step forward, we'd do lower block each side, upper block each side, and harpoon hand each side, then step forward with the other leg and start with the other hand. Got a little confusing but quite fun. Line drills next - instep kick a few laps then turning kick. Then we got into groups. One person held a body shield, and one by one we did turning kicks on it, two each side, before swapping holders, until everyone in the group had had a chance to hold. Then cut kick with a step, followed by standing cut kick. The last drill was on iranians, and we got to punch - which I really like. Finally, we did head touching, which is where you try to touch your partner's head while stopping them from touching yours. My partner was a new white belt and didn't stand a chance.

I finally finished that horrible puzzle today. I really loathed this one, and it's leaving this house! - Day 28 Daily Abs

Mastery training. First thing we did was about half-hour working our respective grading patterns. We did it lots of time, quickly, really drilling the memory. I'm happy with the memory, now I've just got to get my foot in the right spot at a particular station. Just that one thing keeps besting me. The coach with Koryo said we'd have failed but I hadn't thought it was that bad. Humbling, indeed. And learnt something I hadn't got before so that's okay. After that humiliating experience, we all lined up in belt order again, and we were told to show what we knew of Complex 1. It's okay, I wasn't the only one standing there going, errr...? Thing is, I knew it once we were reminded of it. It's always that way with me. Brain refuses to co-operate, needs a bit of a jump-start sometimes. We partnered up and went through it a few times, then Complex 2 (which is slightly easier), then a very brief touch on Complex 3 but I didn't have a chance to have a go at it with my partner because suddenly it was, time's up, go home! It's really hard to practice these without a partner because you're parrying blows, locking arms, spinning the assailant around, not just punching, blocking and kicking as in the self-defences and 3-steps - and they are hard enough to do without a target. I wondered if I could get one of the cats to help me out, but "help" and "cat" are mutually exclusive terms! So though I worked today on the self-defences, it looks as though I should have done the Complexes. Oh well, need to know/remember them all anyway.

I remembered last night that I had been doing (albeit in an alternative order) Spartan Trials. I'm only half-way through but I think I'll stop it and restart it another time, in the proper order.

Do you sometimes think that the Darebee Team are actually mind-readers? I mean, come on. Yesterday I wrote that I was going to do Ironheart, "although it doesn't have a dedicated abs day", and then I wonder what the March Challenge will be, and what does it turn out to be? Better Abs!! Does anyone else hear the Twilight Zone music playing...?

PetiteSheWolf They'd had since Friday 6pm to prepare!
NancyTree That's the brand - Impossibles! The one I'm doing now is really awful. I hate it and I'm getting rid of it once I've finished it. No part of the picture on the box is the same as any part of the puzzle and, quite frankly, it's boring! You'll see what I mean when I finally finish it. I'm so uninspired about it that I don't even put in a dozen pieces a day! But I'm too bloody-minded to give it up!
