Cool, oneironaut ! That makes perfect sense. The microphones have wind socks on them which I suspect would get messed up in a big hurry if birds were using that post as a perch and consequently pooping on them. Thanks!

Wow, that is a really beautiful route! And all the animals and fish and birds! Thanks for the pictures and your adventure!

There is something very zen about being out on the water, isn't there? Do you have a boat? Or access to a rental place?

Here is my final video from Wednesday's paddle (actually shot not on my board, but standing on the sand spit at South Point--which makes for a bit steadier camera work, and less noise of bashing the camera with my paddle as I attempt to spin around on a paddleboard without falling off! ):

The brown protrusions on either side are microphones. I don't know what the spikes on the top of the post are for. I'll have to ask someone!
I do believe those are there to keep the birds from landing on it

Thanks for sharing!!! Love all the photos!

There are several rental places around. I'll need to try a different one from last time, though, because we booked a pretty expensive guided tour for a difficult part of a river to improve our skills, and they had booked the exact same boats for the next tour without any time buffer, so it was all pretty rushed, and they made us clean and carry the boats while shouting at us to go faster. This was pretty rude! I don't mind having to clean and carry the boats, as it's all part of the experience, but if I pay good money for a tour, I expect them to budget enough time for these things.

Yikes! This sounds like not a good business practice to me!

I have never rented a boat for a guided tour. I have rented canoes to go into Algonquin. But that is a you-give-them-your-credit-card-and-they-give-you-a-boat-and-you're-on-your-own deal. The rental fee is by the day, with a half day rate if you pick up after 2PM or return before noon.

In Rondeau they have guided "canoe hikes" now. (Well, not now, due to Covid. But in 2019 they did and in 2022 will hopefully have them again.) There one rents (technically makes a donation to the not-for-profit organization which supports the park and which donated the canoes) to use a boat for the two hour "hike". But there are only two canoe hikes per week. So there is no rush. Sometimes the group returns early if the water is rough (and/or the paddlers are weak). Sometimes the group stays out longer if everyone has the time. (Usually the park staff do not have the time.) Often people join with their own canoes, kayaks, or (in my case) paddleboard. (I often go out with the group but then continue on my own once everyone else turns back.) It's not a money making venture though. It's part of the guided nature experience programming that is included (or would be in the absence of Covid restrictions) with park admission, and it's limited only by the park's shortage of human resources with the necessary qualification to lead a canoe trip.

One time when I was young my father rented a windsurf on a three hour rental. He was supposed to share the rental time with me. But he got on the board, got blown across the lake, and then could not get back. So he spent the entire rental time floundering around at the far side of the lake. When his three hours were up, someone from the rental company went out with a motor boat and towed him back. So I never got to take a turn. I don't think he was charged any extra for the late return or for needing the rescue though.

                  I am glad.

I love snakes. But fear of them is pretty common amongst humans. This unfortunately leads to a lot of persecution of snakes. (I know you respect wildlife. But not everyone does.) So I am always happy if I can help to facilitate a positive ophidian experience for someone.

Workout summary report for week of May 16-22:

Consecutive days of fitness for Laura: 389-395
Consecutive days of fitness for Norma: 423-429

                    running: nada

workouts with my mother: 3:54:00 total time for the week -- third week of our new schedule. I think we have hit a sweet spot re: the intensity and volume of work.

                    other strength training: nada

                    hiking: 18 km

                    SUP: 17 km

                    yoga/dance: nada

                    Only Homemade Food: days 502 - 508
                    Daily French Study: days 189 - 195
                    GOBOT: 1/7
                    GBOT: 1/7

Another slacker week, although I was slightly more productive than the previous one. I'm still bleeding mileage in spite of putting in 17 km on my paddleboard. I need to turn this around soon! I also need to get serious about GOBOT and GBOT again. It messes everything up when I keep stupid hours.

Sunday, May 23 - Rainbow's Consecutive Days of Fitness Day 396

                      running: none

                      push/pull/press/plank:

5 minutes handstand practice: kick-ups, freestanding holds, press walking, some very pathetic attempts at two-footed hops into handstand

Played Scythe online with 'rin and sleep_twitch and Twitchy's husband. It was awesome! (Except that the saved cameras didn't work for anyone but me. Which was sad as the game requires a lot of camera work. I'm pretty sure saved cameras are supposed to work for all players. So I'll have to look into this.) I got up stupid early to eat breakfast first and get the game room loaded. As a result, I crashed in the afternoon, slept for I don't remember how long, and then did not get to bed on time in the evening. GBOT and GOBOT are definitely still works in progress!

SUP: 10 km in 4 hours - another glorious afternoon on the water. I took my GoPro, intending to shoot some head-cam footage for you all. Unfortunately I am not good at judging where a camera attached to my forehead is pointing. I saw lots of great things on my tour, including a flock of 12 Mute Swans floating on the bay nearby, a pair of Green Herons, a Spotted Gar, and an American Bittern that flushed from the reeds pretty much right in front of me. Alas, all the camera captured was twenty minutes of blue sky! I will try again next time.

                              Trudy est malade.

On Sunday night she threw up her dinner. Dogs get sick sometimes, and Trudy has a bit of a sensitive stomach. I figured she had found something she shouldn't have in our yard and I vowed to supervise her better out there. We still went for a walk Sunday evening, but we only went for 1K instead of our usual 3K. Afterward, Trudy threw up again. (This usually happens when she is sick--she'll need to keep vomiting until she's emptied her stomach fully.) We made it to bed almost on time (only half an hour late). Then Trudy threw up again. On the bed. So Sunday night ended up being a lot later than I had planned.

On Monday morning, Trudy was sick again. (There was only a bit of liquid left in her by this point.) I did not give her any food, but tried to get her to have a drink. She would not drink from her water bowl but had a few sips of water from my cupped hand. At this point she was too weak to walk or even stand up on her own. This has never happened before and is much more worrisome. It also presents a practical problem: Trudy weighs 80 lbs. This is the absolute upper limit of what I can goblet squat (at least when the "goblet" is large, awkwardly-shaped, and squirming). And Trudy will not allow me to pick her up. I tried. And she gave me a warning growl. Trudy is a big softy with absolutely no aggression whatsoever. If another dog or a child is too rough with her, she will run behind me to hide. This dog does not do warning growls. But she did on Monday.

This is how we have been getting around since then:

Golden Retriever Trudy riding on a plastic toboggan.

When I first attempted to get Trudy onto the toboggan she was not sure what was going on. But she appears to have decided this is an okay means of getting around and has cooperated in getting onto her ride on subsequent attempts.

Today Trudy seems a bit improved, but she is still too weak to walk. She would not eat her regular breakfast, but she did eat some small biscuits I hand fed to her. She also has been drinking a sports (electrolyte) beverage from my hand. (My hand is stained red from the dye in the drink!) She did eat her dinner just now (which is only a few biscuits--she normally has her main meal in the morning) and drank some water from a bowl, and when I put her toboggan beside her, she managed to get onto it without assistance. Once outside, she got up and took a few shaky, staggering steps on the grass. She managed to pee without assistance, but then lay down again until I brought her toboggan to her to bring her back inside.

I hope we have turned a corner and Trudy will be stronger still again in the morning. I cannot take her to the vets' because our vets currently have their doors locked and are not allowing humans who do not work there into the building. This is a HUGE problem for us because Trudy had absolutely horrible experiences with the vet which the rescue uses when she was under their care. That vet always took animals away from their human caregivers immediately upon entering the premises and never allowed me to be with her for any examinations or other procedures. It was terrifying for Trudy to be separated from her protector like that. And that vet almost killed her. When I adopted Trudy I swore to her she would never have to go to that vet's again and she would never have to see any vet without me being there with her. And now, because of Covid, my own vets will not allow me to go inside their building with her. So I cannot take her to see the vet right now--unless the vet agrees to come outside and see Trudy in their parking lot. Which they told me they would be willing to do if the weather was okay. But I don't know how I would even get Trudy there right now since she cannot currently walk, and we retired the Batmobile (wheelchair accessible van) back in March. Now we only have my mother's car, which is a small sedan. I don't know if I would be able to get Trudy into it while she's in her current state.

Trudy is a strong girl though. She is working very hard to get better.
