My mother and I just completed the first week of our new training schedule. So far so good.

I am behind on my personal workouts for the week. But this is due mostly to bad time management practices on my part (and also partly due to continuing unfavourable weather), not the workouts with my mother. I changed my weekly goals for running and yoga to be distance-based and time-based respectively (as opposed to last week's X times/week goals) because I need to stop falling behind in these areas if I want to reach my goals for the year. (And really the weather here is not THAT bad. I'm just being a wimp about it.) Even with falling behind at the beginning of the week I still had a good shot at making it--until I was reminded that tomorrow is Global Big Day. A mostly cloudy day is forecast for my area (which will make IDing some of the warblers challenging), but overnight rain is expected to clear up by 8AM, and the temperature is at least predicted to remain above zero. So I'll be outside birding most of the day between 8AM and M. This may mean I have some catching up to do on Sunday. But I'm okay with this. At least my overall mileage will get a boost!

This morning we were surprised by an Indigo Bunting visiting our backyard feeders. (I have seen them in the area in previous years, but this was my FOY bunting and also the first time I have seen one come right to our feeders.) Moments later, a Ruby-throated Hummingbird showed up. So I decided it must be time to do a bird count. I got bundled up and headed outside with my camera. Alas, neither the bunting nor the hummingbird put in another appearance, but I observed 18 species in total over the course of 40 minutes, which is not bad for my yard. I have to get outside soon to walk my dogs and run before tonight's rain sets in, but I'll try to get you some photos soon.

Also: I am trying to get back to posting here in my workout thread more regularly and reading all of your threads as well. I made the decision to clear all of my notifications this afternoon because I was just too far behind to ever be able to get caught up. If any of you have started a new workout thread in the past two and a half months, please give me a poke so I won't lose you.

      More later.

Hidden section contains emotionally heavy information. Written plainly with no preamble. (I lack the words to do any better right now.)

One of my closest and most long-time friends died last night.
It was not a surprise. I knew she was sick.
I had not seen her in over a year due to the pandemic.
I won't be able to see her children (one of whom I have known since her birth, the other since the week of his sixth birthday) now, or attend any kind of imminent memorial service/celebration of life, also due to the pandemic. (I hope we will be able to do something together later, once travel and gathering are safer.)
I am trying to figure out what woefully inadequate words to write to her children now.

Those are the hardest goodbyes. I’m so sorry.

It’s always hard to find the right words.

NancyTree I don't think anything has been arranged yet. But probably? My friend had two children, six siblings (three with spouses), and six nieces and nephews (some of whom have children of their own), and the current limit in Ontario for a funeral service is ten people. Both of her children were able to be with her at the end. I am grateful for that for her and for them.
