And... EMS is carting my father off to the hospital. Again.
At this rate we are going to end up adding all of the local paramedics to our Christmas card list.
(Someone in the chain of custody lost his health card the first time he had to go up to the hospital. That still has not been found. But nobody cares. Everyone in the emergency department knows who my father is by now.)

Praying for the both of you. Really hope they can figure out what's going on and treat it properly.

That's awfully rough ... Hugs and wishing you all courage.

Sending positive thoughts and hoping that the cause for his pain can be found quickly so they can start treating it!

DorothyMH I don't know what tests they did on my father yesterday. He's not on any new drugs other than the antibiotics for the cellulitis.

When it comes to salt, my father only hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest. He is a very intelligent person and a scientist and still high functioning mentally most of the time. But he has a real bee in his bonnet about salt. One time my mother and I were arguing with him about his salt intake in front of our family physician. The physician said it was fine for my father to consume 1 teaspoon of salt per day (this is Health Canada's recommended upper limit for an adult). My father chose to interpret this statement as our doctor telling him it was okay for him to eat an actual spoonful of salt--as in: fill a teaspoon with table salt and swallow it straight up--on top of whatever other salt content was present in the food and drinks he consumes each day.

Edit: Oops. I am wrong about the new drugs. My father was prescribed new drugs yesterday. He just hasn't started them yet since he came home after our local pharmacy closed and then had to go right back again first thing this morning. One of the new drugs is a muscle relaxant to help prevent spasms. The other is just a pain reliever. Nothing for GERD.

                    Today the diagnosis is Pancreatitis.
My father has been re-admitted to the hospital this time. So he's spending the night there tonight. After that, who knows? One day at a time.

Ah, so...rest, IVs, IV antibiotics, and nothing by mouth, I bet...? Possibly an NG tube, even....? Are you allowed to see him, or is it just your mom allowed in?

Yickes, what is the underlying cause of the pancreatitis? Lots of hugs, and mademoiselle Luna sends an extra helping of purrs.

IV fluids and antibiotics for sure, DorothyMH . Not sure about NPO. Rest he does all the time anyway as there is very little he can do physically. (At home he enjoys mental stimulation. In the hospital, I think he has access to a television. I sent a laptop there for him when he was admitted last time, but he wasn't able to do anything with it other than watch videos.) He is only allowed one visitor, which will be my mother.

PetiteSheWolf thank you and mademoiselle Luna.

We don't have word on a cause yet. Possibly an infection that was being kept in check by the antibiotic cocktail he was on for the cellulitis but that got out of hand when he switched to just the one oral med? I don't know. They did an ultrasound last night, but we have not heard the results yet.
