So far, I feel great today. Only some slightly muscle ache, but the Darebee programs / workouts toughened us referring to muscle ache.

Today we made a delicious cranberry cake, welcome Foodporn no. 29:

To the gardening bees among us: I need a little advice, ideas, suggestions, etc.

Can anyone suggest something to plant underneath a fig tree? In the vicinity of the fig are mints and a few herbs. To make a better picture of the area I am talking about, here is a little picture. Perhaps anyone has a mindblowing idea.

Our idea is more herbs, mints in pots and "small growing" clover between the pots. But we are not sure if this is a wise choice, perhaps someone faced a similar question in the past. This is our first and probably only fig. What would be the best companion plant ...

Congrats for your shot, I'm glad you aren't experiencing nasty side effects. And that cake is, as usual,

          Oh my, that cake!!

Under the fig: what about strawberries? I don't know if they are a companion plant to a fig tree, but at least they will give you something to eat.
However, clover is usually a good idea, some nitrogen fixers are always good. Beinwell (comfrey) is one, which adds flowers for the bees and you can mulch it in place.

Well, the real question is what do you want to plant? If all you want is ornaments, there are several flowers that can grow very well underneath a fig tree. Hyacinths, ferns, lilies, tulips, violets and daffodils are good choices. Be patient, though. The roots from that tree are quite violent, and they can spread all over, destroying the ground and taking all the humidity. I've read someone online dug holes around their fig tree and used it to make organic compost, so you can also take the space for that.

By the way, if you're thinking about planting spearmint, don't plant it on the same ground where a mint is. Spearmint has stronger genes, and it will take over the mint if you do.

Just a general tip, thanks Sólveig for reminding me, don't ever plant regular thyme and lemon thyme next to each other. You will have all lemon thyme by the end of the season!

Another relaxing day. Tomorrow I am planning on returning to the workouts.

Anek Thanks for your input. The strawberries are the first line of defence for our apple trees. They surround them quite nicely. Beinweil would be indeed really nice. The fig is rather small, more like a bush if you get my drift? Beinweil would be too big, at least atm. But I will definitely remember the Beinweil for further use. Thank you. Especially the mulch part sounds really great.

Sólveig Wow. Because of your hint regarding the mints we checked our mint bed. Much spearmint = but little of the rest. And it was more in the beginning. Will remember that.

JCU That was also a really good hint too. Thanks. It helped us today to sort out which thyme from the balcony will move into the garden (and which one not ).

Our conclusion of the above mentioned hints:

The fig is a water leacher, so we need plants with little water requierements. We have no water connection so we like to use plants with little requirements.
We already had two different thymes on the balcony we wanted to get rid of and planted one of them into the garden. Only the cascade thyme (who seems to act similar to the sandthyme) will move into the garden next to the fig. Thyme only needs little water. We have wet winters in Germany, the fig can use the water as the thyme might be happy when she does. We will buy more cascade thyme so it can cover the free places of the bed. As we might have lost the Mojito mint to the (black) spearmint we are goint to buy more pots to plant mints into.
Clover will be planted on the walkway nearby the fig, as it actually exists of big grass bushes and "nothing" (earth). The entrance of the garden recovered itself, there grows very much white clover and it looks really nice.

                  Happy Sunday.
