    Access to Folders?

Good evening Darebees, it looks like the path to folders has disappeared. It may be the result of the recent hack, and perhaps it has not been brought back yet. I am just curious if that functionality will be restated soon, or shall I download my favourites to my local device?

by the way, no “thank-you” would be enough for all that you guys do to keep this site humming along. I have been forwarding the link to anyone that I know is interested in self-improvement, since this site is more than just a collection of great physical fitness resource. I am grateful.

Bozkurt thank you for both the question and your thoughtful approach to it. The hack set us back in our timetable and it absorbed a lot of manpower and some money to set right. We've also been busy carrying out forensic analysis and examining how to make sure nothing like it happens again. We haven't quite got all the data in just yet but it is beginning to look like that the functionality of site profiles, folders and favorites will have to be sacrificed in order to maintain security and the integrity of the site moving forward. Not 100% definite just yet but very likely, which is my long-winded way of saying that downloading your favorites to your local device is prudent. We'd love to live in a world where we don't have to button down every hatch and lock down every possible point of ingress. We're not there yet it seems. Our Darebee spirit needs to be spread further and wider.

Damer thank you for your detailed response. We all appreciate it. May I ask how to download the workouts? Do you mean in pdf form? Really? This is really disappointing....security has to be the top priority but if there are personal folders I honestly don't know if I will use the website as much as I do nor will I be wanting to contribute monthly. Sorry I know I'm being really shitty and it's not darebee's fault there was a hacker but if i'm not using the website why would I want to donate month?

plowe thank you for adding your opinion here and I appreciate your response. Your last question poses a small issue or two which naturally I would like to address publicly for the benefit of everyone on this thread. DAREBEE is neither a product nor a fitness website in the traditional sense of the word. Had that been the case then your presence here would make you either a customer with a transactional value to us, or a product which we would monetize by using your profile to serve you sponsored posts, paid advertising and sponsored products. We do none of these things for the reasons detailed in our manifesto on being a DAREBEE. Because we do none of this and also because we have no pop-ups, sign-ups, freemium elements, gated content or premium services we rely on a very clear understanding of what it is we actually do and why we choose to operate this way.

My explanation here is very much part of how we communicate this understanding. DAREBEE is, always has been and always will be, focused on the benefits it can deliver to those who need a high-quality, health and fitness resource. We take the view that fitness is a right, not a privilege. As such the amount of money you can spend on this should not be something that either allows you to be fitter and healthier just as your inability to have any money to spare should not condemn you to a lack of fitness, bad nutrition and a diminished quality of life, at this basic human level.

The content we produce, whether it's programs, workouts, articles, recipes or nutritional advice and aids, goes through several labor-intensive and time-consuming layers designed specifically to maximize and maintain quality and value. Despite the very real costs associated with all this and the very pressing costs that arise from the daily operational needs and maintenance of the website and this forum we see donations as a response to a very direct appreciation of the value all this has for each person. In addition, each donation provided by a DAREBEE doesn't just help keep all this working but it contributes, in a very real way, to access to this resource for people who cannot donate and may never be able to donate.

This is transformative. Each donation helps us directly, certainly, but it also helps countless others in a less obvious but nonetheless very real way. Being here then, being active on the site and choosing to donate is not just a direct, transactional exchange of value where a dollar tag is placed on a service we provide and you want to consume, it is also active participation in changing the lives, minds and quite possibly fortunes of countless other individuals across the world. We all want to live in a better world. That better world cannot be built until we are able to actively do something about improving not just ourselves but as many others as possible.

Following the hack we had to examine many things in our technical set up carefully. The site being down deprived many people, for many hours, from a resource they've come to rely on each day. In getting it back up and running so quickly we justified many of our more resource-draining systems and technical activities. We also, inevitably, took careful stock of the situation. The hack cost time, money and resulted in some loss of data. Having it repeated is not something we'd want to see again. The programming that made folders and favorites available is an inherent security weakness. One which, given the rapidly changing nature of the web and the constant need for reviewing and upgrading, will result in greater operating costs to maintain without the guarantee that we have completely addressed the problem and sealed off all points of ingress for a hacker.

Because we place such high value on the ability of every person who uses the site to be able to access it whenever they want, from anywhere, this last consideration became the tipping point for our decision. It is a regrettable loss of functionality we were proud of and many of our team had been instrumental in implementing. In no way does the loss of it however affect the quality of the content we provide or the effectiveness of that content. If the entire DAREBEE effort, for you, is distilled down to that one level of functionality then I agree there is no reason for you to be here and if you are not here then there is also no obvious reason for you to donate.

I do hope however that this is not really what you meant and that you are just frustrated things can't be quite as they were. It is a frustration that all of us on the DAREBEE team share and it's echoed by many others in The Hive. But we all also focus on the real benefits we achieve through what we do each day, the very real culture of mutual acceptance and support that every person in The Hive has created through their conduct and amazing spirit and the very real sense of being something that is larger than us as individuals. Like real BEES, the success of this site and this project is the result of everyone. Naturally, should you decide to go, we'll be sorry to lose you. We also completely respect your decision and will always be thankful for your support.

So, is it pretty much set in stone that folders and tracking progress won't be coming back for some time (if at all), Damer?
If yes, and printing out workouts for ticking off boxes etc. will be one way to go, would it be possible in the long run to make printer friendly versions of the pdfs? By which I mean, pdfs that are only black and white, without the grey background. That would be a wish for the future, of course, as it sounds like you're all still very busy with working on the site after the attack.
You're doing great work and I can't thank you enough for all that you do and your post above is one of those many things I keep coming back to Darebee (and donating when I can)

Nihopaloa unfortunately, after our last round of testing it is pretty much the case at the moment. Attacks are becoming more technically sophisticated as well as more robust with the use of very specialized tools that two-three years ago wouldn't even be available in the wild. The decision to remove the functionality was not an easy one. I will bring your suggestion to our next meeting. Thank you.

Damer, thanks for your (and others) hard work and detailed explanation as to why the folders and progress tracking cannot return for the forseeable future. I am disappointed but I completely understand. I have worked out on and off for years, but this site with it's workouts, programs and support from the Hive has really changed how I work out. Darebee has a huge positive impact on my life and I do donate every December. Thank you once again!

Damer thank you so much for your response. I'm sorry for my hissy fit. I was grumpy and I have just gotten used to a certain method of training planning and progress tracking and now i need to rethink it. I think i have found a work-a- round that works for my type of training. I have created Darebee folders on my Google drives and copied my workouts there, with the google drives I can access my darebee folder from all devices. As the files are pdf's, I like that fact that I can rename the workout files so the files are more meaningful to me. Unfortunately I have to go back to the Darebee website to use the workout timer feature and I can't save progress if i'm following training program, but for me these are little annoyances. I do hope one day the folders feature will come back but for now I can live with this. Long Live Darebee!!

plowe no worries at all and really, when the hack happened, if we could have skinned someone we really would have. Thankfully it is our focus on all you guys that keeps us sane. What you are all doing is amazing and it also helps us stay focused on what really counts. We do have some really exciting stuff coming up in the next few days that will hopefully more than make up for the current minor annoyances. Darebees may get down occasionally, but together we are all unbeatable!

                    Good Day Darebees,

For those of you who have been using the previous features of the website to track your progress and keep track of your workouts/programs, I would be happy to share with you my Excel template. Although I was also using the Darebee site to keep track of my progress, I have been tracking my workouts through a spreadsheet as well. What can I say, I believe in redundancy :-) Let me know if anyone is interested, and I will figure out to offer a Dropbox link to it here.

Let this be the biggest of your worries :-)

Bozkurt I'm not sure if you made a spreadsheet for DDs. But if not and if anyone looking at this thread is curious - I made one about that!

(I hope you don't mind my addition. I also made a thread about potentially crowdsourcing this kinda stuff, if you're interested!)

You can always make a spreadsheet on Goggle Drive, Dropbox or just an online mail account, so You can access it from everywhere. I have .xls-sheets for my stuff for the last 13 years, the one for this year looks like that, (for Avatar Upgrade):

Never say never, but for now the statement seems to be clear: folders won't come back. See Damer's posts above.
