Stand with your feet close together, arms up in a loose, relaxed guard. Hop a small distance to one side, landing light on the balls of your feet, then hop straight back the other way - bouncing side to side over an imaginary line in a steady rhythm. Your feet can land naturally, one a beat ahead of the other; what matters is staying springy, landing soft, and keeping the lateral rhythm going.
Works: calves, quads, glutes, hip abductors
Breathing: Steady and rhythmic, in time with the hops.
Common Mistakes: Hopping so far sideways the rhythm breaks, landing heavy on flat feet, and letting the upper body sway side to side with every hop.
Make Easier: Take the impact out - step side to side at the same rhythm - or warm into it with Hops on the Spot.
Make Harder: Lock your feet together for Hops: Side-to-Side Feet Together, or widen the distance with Side-to-Side Jumps.
