DAREBEE Workout: What it Works
Focus: Cardio
Type: Burn
Difficulty: level 1 of 5

Shadow Steps is a low-impact cardio circuit made of shadows - the jump-free silhouettes of exercises you already know: 10 step jacks, 10 march jacks, 10 step jacks, 10 step bicep extensions, 10 step seal jacks, 10 more step bicep extensions, and 10 final march jacks. Every movement here is the stepped version of something that usually leaves the ground, keeping all of the rhythm and none of the impact.

The design answers a real problem: jumping jacks and their relatives are superb conditioning, but landings add up - for downstairs neighbors, for joints having a cranky week, for anyone easing back into training. Shadow Steps rebuilds the whole family with one foot always on the floor. Step jacks trade the jump for an alternating side-step with the full overhead arm swing intact; march jacks pair the arm arc with a knee lift, which quietly demands more balance than the original; step seal jacks swap the vertical arm path for a horizontal clap-and-open that works the chest and rear shoulders. The step bicep extensions threaded between them add self-resisted arm work on top of the footwork, so your arms never fully rest even when the cardio eases. Same shapes, same heart rate climb, softer footprint.

Step wide and deliberately in step jacks, matching the full arm swing overhead to each step - the arms are where the work lives now, so never shortchange the arc. In march jacks, drive the knee to hip height as the arms sweep up. Keep step seal jacks at shoulder height, opening wide enough to feel the squeeze between your shoulder blades. In step bicep extensions, clench your fists and extend with real tension while your feet keep the rhythm going.

A shadow follows everything the body does - minus the landing. Your knees send their regards.

Make it Harder: Pick up the tempo across every station while keeping one foot planted at all times.

Make it Easier: Slow the pace and let the arms rest at your sides during the step jacks whenever your shoulders need a set off.

Grateful for your promise in keeping this site accessible and free for people of all fitness levels & goals around the world. Found Darebee some time years ago and used to just save the workouts and then forget about them somewhere in my documents & to do later lists 😅 but coming back to the site this year I loved the organised/simple layout & navigation of the site with full workout video at bottom to see proper form and notes to make things easier or harder depending on your fitness/energy aswell as an extensive exercise library with joint friendly alternatives. I found it much easier to track/check off completed workouts & days on program/plan on dashboard, was more likely to remember & do it + advanced filter made it quick to find a doable workout. As a tiny way to support this site I made account and use the site exclusively for exercises now, will look to donate when I can 🙏🏽 and would recommend it to all I talk to regarding fitness. Thank you Darebee team for the great job you've all done here and keep up the good work. Blessings to you all.
