Most stores offer tomato sauces ready to go but they never taste quite as good as homemade. If you don’t have time to make sauce from scratch, though, two ingredients - cinnamon and molasses, will make any tomato sauce taste absolutely delicious. Molasses counters the acidity of the tomatoes and cinnamon brings out the flavor.
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ tablespoon molasses
1Combine tomato sauce, cinnamon and blackstrap molasses in saucepan.
2Cover the saucepan with a lid and bring the paste to a simmer ~ 2 minutes. Stir a couple of times and serve over pasta or roasted eggplant.
Swaps & Tips
- It’s always best to buy salt-free and oil-free tomato sauces but look for a version with already added onions and carrots.
- Blackstrap molasses is still sugar but unlike white or brown sugar it is nutritionally dense and will even up your iron intake.
