    Vitality Program

I just completed the Vitality Program, which I did every day for the past 30 days with my mother. This was a pretty big deal because, pre-Covid19, my mother was doing 4 exercise classes/week at our local seniors' community centre. Not only was this her only form of physical exercise, but it was my only opportunity to get her out of the house so I could get work done at home without her interference. To not only lose my only peaceful at home time but deliberately decide to use that time now to be in the same room with each other, working out together... let's just say I was taking a significant gamble on my ability to tolerate the experiment mentally. But my mother is 79 years old, I knew she would not be motivated to workout by herself, and I did not want her to devolve into spending the entire day in her La-Z-Boy. So I suggested the program, my mother agreed to try it, and we were off.

My mother had to use a balance/weight-bearing assist for all of the exercises which involved standing on one leg, but otherwise was able to complete the program without modifications. She was initially pretty lazy about the arm work, not bothering to keep her arms lifted enough to get much benefit out of it. I encouraged her, repeatedly, to keep her elbows up, up, up! She complained, but she did start to lift her arms higher. Now she is tickled because she is starting to see muscle definition in her arms which was not there before.

For myself, I enjoyed the program a lot more than I thought I would. The "cardio" element in Vitality is trivial for me. But because I have excellent ROM in my shoulders and hips I was able to maintain optimal form throughout the exercises, which enabled me to derive not insignificant strength-training benefit from them myself. (In the beginning, when my mother was being lazy about the arm work, I in fact was feeling the upper body days a lot more than she was.)

In the end, I survived the experience (in spite of the running commentary of complaints from my mother), and, far from having to cajole my mother into doing the workouts each day (as I had feared would be the case), most days it was my mother who was asking me, "Are you ready to do our program now?"

Now we just need to decide whether to do Foundation Light or Baseline next.
