        I've been faithfully meditating but

Damn this has been really hard to sit for 10 minutes. The last few days have been brutal.

          You'll get there, mochalette!

I haven't sat for two days! I will do today!

From this non-expert position, I will butt in and say that "difficult" meditations are - according to my reading - probably doing you a load of good, and are also very much a "natural" part of the process!

Well done for your patience, Mochalette and Librarian, I will take your example today!

                A quick question....

How long should be done for the Om... mantra meditations in the Meditation Challenge?

                Thank you!

colinclean good question - don´t know - I for my part do it everytime when my mind starts to wander ... again Therefore on all days. Helps me a lot to get my mind gently back to focus - but it s more an "breath in" breath out" instead of "ommmmm" "oommmm" if you get my drift. Hope it helps, at least this is how I interpreted the challenge and adapted it to my personal needs.

colinclean, there are no set rules regarding OM, so I think you can adapt this as you like. Usually, it's done on the exhale and is as long as the expiration is (you're slowly prolonging it). The way I read Darebee's suggestion is to repeat it three times out loud, which is also the way we used to do it in our YTT most of the time, sometimes we did 5.

My favourite and the most powerful experiences with mantras were the few times we did 15 min of OM mantra, each person in their own rhythm, 13 different voices at once, quite loud. We mostly synchronized by the end and it was just pure vibration of sound in the room and in our bodies and nothing else, or so it seemed (ok, I know I sound like a weird hippy but it was really something special ).

                      Day 16 done.
for the Om, so far what Ive read and practiced is to simply repeat for the length of the meditation along the linesAnn-Core mentioned above and I say it out loud.
so far Ive found it a great focus, feel a bit of a dick.
i have found it quite freeing and in some ways simpler to focus on than just the beath.

In case anyone wants to experiment with sounds, there are other so-called seed mantras (bija mantras), each associated with a specific chakra in some traditions/schools. We sang these 5 times, 4 times quickly and the 5th time was "dragged out":

                        “LAM”- chakra 1 (root) (Laaahhhm)

                        “VAM”- chakra 2 (sacral/navel) (vaaaahhhm)

“RAM”- chakra 3 (solar plexus) (rhaaaahhhmmm)

                        “YAM”- chakra 4 (heart) (yaaahhhmmm)

                        “HAM”- chakra 5 (throat) (haaahhhmmm)

“OM”- chakra 6 (third eye/brow) (ohmmm or ah-oo-m)

                        “SILENT OM”- chakra 7 (crown)

Oooh, oooh, this is the perfect place for me. As a practitioner of Zen Buddhism since 2012, I know a thing or two about meditation!

thanks, Ann-Core - hippies are great! RawCookie, who's moved on from Darebee now, did chanting meditations I remember.

Nice one, Rathgar. And welcome aboard fat-to-fightingfit - I was going to try a Zen-inspired meditation challenge for January and post it here to see if anyone wanted to join in, it'd be nice to hear your knowledge.

I did a 5-minute sit yesterday. And I did a bit of feeling around with OM (au --- uu --- mmmmmmm), and it felt nice, but I never quite got round to sitting properly with it, so I shall do that today. Thank you for all the tips!

I meditate every morning, get up early and sit. We live in an apartment building on the 15th floor, watching the sunrise is magic. Best when some clouds coz of the colours. I also will meditate before my Yoga class which I go 6 days a week.
