My partner was concerned about me doing 200 jumping squats in one go - well, it's done! And on top of that I did 15 minutes of full-speed jig practice. I could do more slow practice later but 4 drills at full speed is pretty good.

Expecting a long-ish day today but glad that I got my exercise out of the way quickly. Going to a wedding reception where I'm not sure I'll be able to stick to MH but I'm trying. Meanwhile I have plenty of veggies and so forth here at home.

    Today:

    Hero's Journey Day 9
15 minutes sean-nós dance drill (fast speed crossover jig)

    124 days in a row - 17 weeks 5 days

Gratitude: Snow peas in my balcony garden are ripe, bird song and a cool breeze, and felt actually pretty strong doing jumping squats!

Those 200 jumping squats were a challenge, right?! Well done!

Oh!! New program! The Olympian looks absolutely awesome but I'm a bit intimidated by the level 4 rating. Well, there's still around 50 more days of HJ so it'll be a while until I have a chance to give it a try.

TopNotch They were but honestly I really didn't want to do the other option! And I ended up mentally breaking them up into sets of 10-20 so with the addition of some energetic music and catching my breath here and there in between sets (less than 20 seconds), they flew by!

Since transitioning from knee push-ups, my form hasn't been the best so it's hard for me to really measure "to failure..." however, I think I'm beginning to be able to do more reps than I used to and that's rewarding. Hoping as that becomes easier I can be more intentional about focusing on my form.

I have a lot to think about as others have already posted about in terms of combining exercises, especially programs with other exercises. However, I'm really inspired by NeilaRey's body recomposition after doing HJ and I know that she also incorporated some jogging and 30 days of yoga in that process. I'm hoping that dancing can be substituted for jogging without setting me back too far in terms of progress on HJ. In particular, dancing does seem to require some lower body strength.

          Today:

          Hero's Journey Day 10

          125 days in a row - 17 weeks 6 days

Gratitude: Treated myself to a free shopping trip using gift cards from the holiday season, thankful for a quiet day at home, and time to balance healthy activity and rest

Feeling under the weather. Typically I would postpone HJ for a day and do the bare minimum in terms of movement to maintain my streak... but I'm trying to at least keep up with HJ each day. So I'm choosing the easy option today and foregoing Karma I figure some slow dance drills will suffice for the required skips.

            Today:

            Hero's Journey Day 11
MH-ish... I've been averaging around 1 meal a day that feels truly to the spirit of Modern Hero. Today's lunch was definitely not, but I'm trying to be more conscious about how much of the meal is fruit/veggies.

            126 days in a row - 18 weeks

Gratitude: Absolutely great nap after work, lovely weather on my drive today, and delicious fresh grapes

Still not 100% but I maintained my streak yesterday by doing a handful of squats.

I feel like I've really been dropping the ball on dance I'll update here if I can manage to make any progress today

Edit: I did my jig lesson for the week since those are not as intense as reels. Still broke a sweat and actually I feel much better for it! Reels will have to wait until tomorrow

              Today:

              Hero's Journey Day 13
Sean-nós dance drill (slow and fast side shuffle step)
MH-ish... green smoothie and almonds for brunch and I'm planning on a veggie-heavy dinner. But going to have at least one drink while playing music tonight after a night out last night for a volunteer meeting.

              128 days in a row - 18 weeks 2 days

Gratitude: Building up speed and sounding good while playing music, flowers I grew are about to bloom, and garden ripe snow peas

Feeling stronger and HJ wasn't that bad!

                Today:

                Hero's Journey Day 14
Sean-nós dance drill (reel lesson - Aran side step)
MH-ish.. good mix of foods but maybe meal timing was off

                129 days in a row - 18 weeks 3 days

Gratitude: feeling a bit better, joys of good music, and nice smelling soap

Feeling so down this week even though physically I made it through. Motivation is waning and my "to failure" push ups are far fewer. It might be the long work week, or maybe just the near constant clouds that are hanging overhead. It feels like summer isn't really here.

But I'm pushing through the bare minimum of HJ and guess I'll face up to the Karma. To be honest I've been doing pretty darn good with MH meal plan and have been limiting carbs quite a bit. Maybe my body is grumpy for that reason. Sun is coming out so the goal is to go for a walk outside and get some vitamin D

Edit: I was sort of craving a burger, fries, and a milkshake. So I made myself roasted sweet potato with sea salt, a mango yogurt smoothie sweetened with stevia, and a big bowl of a little chicken sausage and mostly zucchini. I'm full and it sort of worked.... I feel a million times better

                  Today:

                  Hero's Journey Day 15
                  Sean-nós dance drill
                  MH-ish

                  130 days in a row - 18 weeks 4 days

Gratitude: end of the week, birds are cheerful outside, and the seeds I planted this past spring have blossomed into flowers

It’s been like that over on our side of the Cascades, also. Very unlike our norm. On days that are actually “hot” it’s only in the upper 70’s. Not typical AT ALL. Has me very discombobulated….

                      Comment

DorothyMH sorry to hear it's the same over there! I was half considering an emergency trip to the east side where I believe it's always sunny (even though I swear it hails/rains on me every time I'm there). A coworker was looking up round trip flights to Vegas just for the sun.

Well, I woke up this morning and immediately completed HJ core day so I'm feeling somewhat more optimistic... my partner even complimented my form so that felt good even though flutter kicks and leg raises still hurt so much.

I will say that I'm feeling stronger even though I'm not seeing a huge difference in my body fat or the way clothes fit - but I definitely think my back and shoulders and posture are improved. And for the first time, my core day wasn't that bad! Maybe there's hope yet

Goal for today is to practice the jig and reel side steps back to back so I can really get the difference down in my head and as muscle memory in my feet. A friend of mine that organizes a local festival around music e-mailed a bunch of folks yesterday about setting up a group to help promote social dancing (Irish céilí and so forth) during the festival. So there might be more opportunity to share sean-nós dancing too! I absolutely love it when people dance to the music I play so that's why I wanted to be a dancer for others as well. Plus it's a bodyweight cardio workout that can be done literally anywhere!

                        Today:

                        Hero's Journey Day 16
                        Sean-nós dance drill
                        MH-ish

                        131 days in a row - 18 weeks 5 days

Gratitude: my partner, long weekend, and the summer solstice! (It's actually cloudy right now)

Another upper body day! My journey with push-ups feels like it's been a roller coaster these past few months. Still struggling with the concept of "to failure" but I have been trying to take my time with my reps and I think I'm getting deeper into the push-up. That means I can do less reps overall but I think my form is better. I have to remind myself that even if I'm feeling weak I've still come a long way from knee push-ups.

                          Today:

                          Hero's Journey Day 17
                          Sean-nós dance drill
                          MH-ish

                          132 days in a row - 18 weeks 6 days

Gratitude: coffee (I treat myself to a sip of hot coffee in between sets), looking forward to a bike ride to buy fresh cherries today, and thankful for a quiet morning overlooking the bay

Congratz on being able to keep yourself motivated for a 132 days! I'm sure there was quite a bit of "powering through" at times. You are training your willpower as much as your mind, body and spirit. And willpower has a LOT of applications!

Good luck with your food control. My experience has been that The Battle of the Bulge is indeed won in the kitchen, not the gym.

Music and dancing sounds like a great way to work on fitness. Have you kept up with your concertina practice, that you mentioned some weeks back?

                            Comment

Ninshubur thank you for the support! Yes definitely working on diet is a priority for me as I feel much better mentally and physically on a more balanced way of eating. It's the outside influences around me that are a challenge though - otherwise I don't think it would be so difficult as I really prefer eating essentially plant-based (with some eggs and dairy) and lots of fruit.

Yes I have been practicing concertina but I keep forgetting to log here! I played in a session lasting around 3 hours over the weekend and I feel fairly played out. I think my clarity has improved on a lot of tunes when I play them at speed so I'm feeling pretty proud of that. I even received a compliment as I did a little bit of harmony to accompany a song that a lady sang - typically these types of songs are sung a capella but she wanted some instrumental backup. For a concertina, it is hard to make it sound subtle so this was actually a very nice compliment to receive

Our duo has our first "show" of around 5-10 minutes in a couple of weeks so we have been putting together our set list and practicing weekly. Thank you for the reminder as I really need to sit down and spend some time today on the tune I'm learning for it: Swan & Dolphin Reel

Well so much for MH last night... a last minute phone call from my partner's high school friend who happened to be in town and it happened to be his birthday... so pizza it was rather than veggie curry. But today I have a day to myself so it's veggies all the way!

After a few weeks of dance drilling and some added cardio in HJ it's hard to gauge progress. However, I am feeling pretty strong with high knees and especially with climbers today... and if a workout breaks a sweat, that's a good sign right? I've been trying to do my HJ and dancing back to back so I only have to shower once. Good problems to have

                              Today:

                              133 days in a row - 19 weeks

Gratitude: state holiday means a day off work, great music keeps me energized, peace and quiet means time to spend on art and creativity

I love punches so today is a good day!

Also a good day because my calendula is blooming I had some seeds I'd saved from a few years ago and took a chance planting them this spring. Calendula is a strong and stubborn plant which is why I chose it for my name here. It is in a lot of herbal products such as healing ointment and so forth - good for skin health. Also it smells nice and is very cheerful and bright - on a cloudy days the orange blossoms glow like a safety vest.

For me, my journey to a sustainable and healthy lifestyle has been motivated by the fact that I am working to outgrow many of the old stories I was taught about myself growing up. I began to identify with many traits based on what others told me - that while I was a "smart kid," I wasn't talented as an athlete so I shouldn't try. We had a very sedentary lifestyle when I was a kid. Also I struggled a lot with my mental health and began to identify with those characteristics of withdrawal, isolation, and a gloomy outlook.

On this journey to health and strength there have been struggles along the way - with my competitiveness and scarcity thinking, perfectionism - but overall keeping my daily activity streak and committing to a healthy diet (including information diet) is a reminder that I will grow if I take care of myself - and that as I grow, I will have more to offer to others and and hopefully make the world a little bit brighter.
