Thanks for the beautiful pictures of the last few days. I love the giant spider! And compliments for running at such beastly temperatures. Incredible!

huma Gandhalfit Rissa lofivelcro AnnieW Thanks all, it is kind of weird to get praise for doing something that I was actively trying to avoid, but as always I appreciate the kind words of my friends in the Hive.

Another day mostly spent inside due to the cold. I did warm up the car for my wife this morning and then later had to rapidly clear out the garage (which is only about 2 or 3 degrees warmer than the outside) to make room for the car in advance of a coming snow storm. I made it over 10,000 steps.

This evening I did Space Cowboy (level I, EC) and Chest and Back Light. My wife picked up a few extra shifts to help out at the hospital, which is obviously pretty short of nurses these days. I wasn't sure if she was going to want to workout, although I did have a partner workout planned. She didn't but I had a backup plan. Last year I bought a book on massages, which is still packed away in a box some place, but coincidentally there was a massage tutorial today on one of the fitness channels that I subscribe to, so I followed along and gave her a 20 minute back massage. It didn't seem like such hard work, but now my back (and arms and fingers) are sore, so I guess it also counts as exercise and I will register it as my partner workout for this rotation. With the dips in the first workout that leaves me with only Wild Card for this rotation.

I did 100 pushups as well.

We got a lot of snow today, the most the city has seen in a single day in 6 years and the most ever in the historical record for this day. I am not sure of the total, but by by 3pm it was 43 cm and it continued snowing after that. My wife had a night shift, and I knew that I was going to have to shovel out the laneway before she left, so I did it in two shifts, not wanting to leave a lot of work until right before she left. On the first shift at around noon, I also helped one of my neighbours dig another neighbour's car out of a snowbank. As always moving so much snow is a good workout and I registered over 12,000 steps for the day.

Last night I cleared as much space as possible in the garage so that the car would fit in, and so today when my wife took the car to work in the evening I had the empty garage space to use. The garage is not heated, so it is only about three to five degrees warmer than the outside, but outside by this point was around -8 so it was around -4 in the garage. I knew that skipping rope would keep me warm so I did Power Line (EC). I am still not very good at skipping, this workout required me to do 30 skips 25 different times, and I only managed twelve of those without tripping on the rope at some point (though I did manage the last six consecutive with no trips). When I came back in the house I did Homemade Back (level I, EC) and Chest & Shoulders. I haven't seen the "lawnmower" before in the database, not a very difficult move, but I added a resistance band to make it a bit more challenging. I had to add 10 pushups to the total, though still not sure how I feel about diver pushups counting towards the total.

The skipping rope (and technically also the resistance band) satisfy the requirements for Wild Card in the rotation, so the rotation is done. Lighter day tomorrow then starting over.

As planned today was mostly an off day. I got to kick a soccer ball around on a practice net at Decathlon for a few minutes, and otherwise got over 10,000 steps.

In the evening I did Limitless and 100 pushups.

I did a run about midday today, after missing the earlier morning in order to run some errands. There is so much snow around the city still that I didn't even consider finding a more interesting route to run and instead just did a neighbourhood run on streets that I hadn't run on before. The route was not the best, as I was mostly running on hard pack snow which has the same consistency of sand. The hardest part of the run was having to run uphill in ankle height snow at one point. My time was accordingly pretty slow, 4.9 km for 32:55.

I didn't feel like much in the evening so I did Arms 360 and 100 pushups. This is a decent workout to satisfy the dips requirement for a lighter day. I should revisit it.

This workout satisfies dips for this rotation so I am left with pushups, pullups, plyometric, partner, dumbbells, abs, kicks and wild card. Though I have been considering adding a requirement (or two) to this rotation. I am not sure yet, it usually takes me 4 or 5 days to work through the 9 requirements, so that would mean 5 or 6 days, though with lighter options.

Just think how much benefit you get running on such a surface! Harder workout for the quads, having to use all those stabiliser muscles to a greater degree, etc etc - seems to me that just walking to the mailbox would be a day's workout!

              Comment

TopNotch It is definitely a different sensation to run like that and I do feel different muscle strain at the end. Though with slower speeds not usually too pronounced.

I could have run today, but I decided on an off day instead. I still had to run some errands and got over 7000 steps.

In the evening I did Push-Up Massacre NC17 (level I) and a workout from the Partner Workouts book. The first workout was pretty intense, with 180 pushups. Also when doing back extensions after the pushups (with hands touching head) my arms were in a state of extreme discomfort (not really pain). I wasn't expecting that, but I guess that is a result of cutting off blood flow to the arms when they need it.

The partner workout was called Twice Bitten, Once Shy. It comprised of the following: walkout ankle taps (walking out planks to touch partner's ankle); down dog crawl (one partner holds down dog, the other crawls underneath); wide plank and agility footwork (doing high knees or march steps over partner's wide plank legs); burpee jumps (one partner holds a back extension, other partner does burpess and then jumps over the other partner's back); tabletop and jumping jack (one partner holds a table top aka leg extension, while the other partner holds a plank on the first partner's back and does jacks, my wife tried to hold me but couldn't so we just did this on one side); donkey kick (donkey kicking over other partner's plank, again only my wife did this as she can't hold me weight); narrow pushup and jump over (one partner does a pushup, other partner side jumps over when at the base of the pushup); and situp and jumping jack (one partner does situps and the other does jacks from a high plank supported on partners knees). I got 6 more pushups from the second last exercise, so I added 14 more after to make this 200 for the day.

As per yesterday's idea of adding more to the rotation I am still thinking about it. It would be one specific exercise (skipping) and one not very specific (any agility exercise). The problem with skipping (and partner exercises for that matter) is that they are not always available, because I can only really do them in the garage at the moment and don't want to do that when it is much colder than -5 out there (probably around -20 at the moment). Anyway, I will not add them to this rotation, maybe the next one.

I did enough plyometric in tonight's workout to satisfy that for this rotation and also had pushups and partner. So that leaves me with pullups, dumbbells, abs, kicking and wild card for this rotation.

Last night was the coldest temperature of the year so far, and so it was also quite cold this morning. I went for a run anyway. I think that it was the coldest air temperature that I have been in this year at -23 degrees when I left, but there was also almost no wind so very little wind chill to factor in. Regardless, i think that it was the coldest that I have felt on a run so far, though I have noticed that there seems to be a correlation between coldest runs and whether I have driven to them or not. Presumably sitting in the cold car is enough to cool me down substantially enough before I start, though by the time I get to the places where I am going the car is usually pretty warm. Hopefully I don't have to ponder such questions much longer. This should hopefully be the coldest stretch of the year. I did see something interesting on my run. At one point right near where my route intersected the large river, the trees seemed to be covered with a thin coat of snow. I am Canadian, and seen all kinds of ice and snow, and never seen something like this. My best guess is that a light warmer snow was falling pretty heavily and then frozen pretty fast (which is more or less what happened earlier in the week). Anyway, it created a neat effect on the trees and bushes, as most of their branches would not be wide enough to support much snow usually. I did 4.8 km in 30:32.

In the evening I did Valour, Home Upperbody Tone (level I), Pushup Party (level I, EC) and Wizard (level I, EC). I guess that I was not specific when I said that I have dumbbells in my rotation. What I really mean to say is that I have biceps curls in my rotation, so that is why I did two dumbbell workouts as the first (and newest one) didn't have any in it. Kudos to the Darebee as well for the British/Canadian spelling. I used 15 kg dumbbells for the curls, 6 pound dumbbells for the punches and 20 pound dumbbells for everything else. Pushup Party was obviously a pushup workout, which I did yesterday, but it was more so just a way to break up the monotony of doing 100 pushups everyday. It only had 16 pushups per set, and 4 of those were the easier sky diver pushups.

With dumbbells done, I now have pullups, abs, kicking and wild card in this rotation.

huma Anek NancyTree mavie Thanks all!

Even if it is pretty cold out (though we are past the worst of the cold streak), it is nice in a sense to get out for a run because making step count without leaving the house is pretty boring. I made it over 10,000 today, but only left the house in the morning for a few minutes to run to the hardware store.

This evening I did Abs Please (level I, EC), Rockin Abs (level I, EC), Bounty Hunter (level I) and Armageddon (level I, EC). I didn't read the Extra Credit requirement for the third workout until after I did it and I am not sure if I would have gotten it, though I probably did. Not a big deal anyway. I added 88 pushups to make it to 100.

This evening was abs and kicking, so I have pullups and wild card left in this rotation.

SheWhoMustNotBeNamed Thanks, it is getting to the point now when I go outside and -10 feels warm.

Another day mostly stuck at home. I am relying a little bit on step challenges from fitness apps to keep going these days as the steps are almost all indoors. Still I made it over 13,000 steps today.

In the evening I did One-arm Push-Ups Prep (EC) and Push & Pull Express. I think that EC is probably wrong in the first workout as it is just what the workout details anyway. I tried a couple of one-armed pushups at the end. I didn't got much movement, but I got some. just like the day when I trained these in Strength Protocol, I am not really interested in these anyway, I just did it because it was on the list of upper body workouts. I did 6-3-3-2 on the pullups in the second workout, which means I am getting the reps back a little higher. Still have pain in the right bicep when doing them though.

I added 50 more pushups to make it to 100.

I am counting the One Arm Pushups and prep as this rotation's wild card, and I also did pullups, so I am done this rotation.
