    Avoiding the 70% – Sable’s Training Log

I just found this website a few days ago. All I can say is, “WOW”. I think I’ve found my tribe. First, a little background.

I’m a middle-aged (that’s the first time I’ve ever admitted THAT) woman who has children, all adults now, that I still blame for that spread. I’ve never been terribly athletic, but it’s only that past few years I’ve noticed that the ageing is catching up in a big way. My knees hurt, my ankles are sore, I’ve been diagnosed with osteoarthritis – so far just my hands are affected – but it’s been a wakeup call.

I used to be able to walk & hike for miles. I rode my bike for part of my work commute (about 10 miles twice a day). I used to be able to lift over 30 kilos with no real effort and leg press almost 100. What happened?

I can blame ageing, but really, it’s complacency. If I don’t do something now, today, it’ll all be downhill. The title I used for this training log is from a book I read a couple of years ago by Chris Crowley & Henry Lodge called Younger Next Year for Women. The research states that 70% of the negative effects of ageing can be avoided by being fit. Whether or not that’s true, I cannot say, but, I have an aunt who is over 80 and it one of the fittest people I know. I visited her in Scotland last year. We walked together – a lot – and I’m embarrassed to admit, she was fitter than me!

But there’s hope. I found this wonderful resource. I KNOW what I need to do. I have a tendency to make grand plans but after a day or so, they fall by the wayside and inertia takes over. So what’s different this time? Public accountability maybe. I can lie and say I did such and such a workout, but really, who am I hurting? Only myself. I remember reading a book a couple of years ago. There was a quote that resonated with me, it comes to mind now, this first day of the rest of my life, “the soreness of an active day far better than the knifing ache of idleness” (Lisa Gardner).

So tonight, the hope is to be sore because I exercised - hard. And the day after that, and so on, and so on.

updating Thursday morning because I am exhausted! Working is hard enough, wearing a mask in high temperatures makes it even more challenging. Today is a new day
