An anxiety attack woke me up... wtf? Seriously? It was so scarry I thought I was having a heart attack. I need to wake up in 4.5 hours but I can't fall back to sleep. Chelsea is trying to help, she came to the bed to cuddle and now she's sleeping next to me. She's a cat, I should count that as "trying to help".

She is definitely trying to help. I'm so sorry you're having such a rough night.

Chelsea definitely came to help, cats are smart like this. Do you have a routine to fall back on when you have an anxiety attack? Something like a breathing exercise can help temporarily to get some feeling of control and calm back. Some people also use songs or fiddle toys.

No routine Rissa that's a good idea, I'll think of something.

Yes, avoidance makes it worse, but sometimes pushing through does too. And if you're not able to do your job because of your health (physical or mental), that's what sick days are for and you take care of yourself to make it betterand you can return to work. Punishing yourself doesn't make it better, so I think that's not where sick days are for. So be gentle and kind to yourself.

Regarding poor Chelsea: Pico loses weight really fast if she's under stress. I also had her for a few weeks on kitten food to regain her weight, because she had lost a lot of weight after we moved here and she went outside for the first time. But it's not good to give it for a long time because (as they told me) it has a lot of protein which (in that amount) can be harmful to adult cat's kidneys. I also learned that in wet food are way less calories than dry food (except of course the very expensive vet cans for sick animals).
Her basic energy consumption is alway high though, since she is an outdoor cat, she needs special food with more calories to make up for the energy she loses by going outside.

For you and your kitty. I hope you're both doing better. And I agree, a mental health day is a legitimate sick day. You need to take care of yourself first. It's not selfish.

Does your work allow for any vacation? It might be time to take a week. It really helped me the last time it felt like the world was collapsing around me. Considering how much stress you've been under I don't think it is unreasonable to need a little mental health time.
