Fremen DorothyMH Thank you! Happy New Year!

          Comment

Well, the last week of the year was a long one! Mom, aunts, and sister went to my aunt’s funeral in the state next to us. She lived here for the past few years, but her burial plot was in the state she lived in previously. They left Monday and came back Tuesday.

My week was spent taking advantage of the free birth, marriage, and death records Ancestry had for a limited time. Such a mind numbing task! Of course, it would have been infinitely easier if we could sort the type of records in our hints. My family tree is so large, I had over 4,000 pages of record hints! Needless to say, I didn’t come anywhere close to getting all the free ones. Plus, going through the records created a cycle where new people would get added to the tree followed by new hints. Body count is over 10,000 now!

Dad has been asking me pretty often if my aunt is on the tree now. She’s literally been on the tree since I started building it, and I update it whenever a new event happens (whether birth, death, or marriage) the minute I hear of it. So, yes Dad, my aunt, my aunt-by-marriage, and my cousin have been updated! Also, apparently there’s some drama concerning newfound cousins. My dad’s first cousin (S) who has an ancestry account but not a DNA test through there, apparently doesn’t believe that the two people we discovered were cousins are in fact the daughters of my dad and S’s first cousin. These two women were a close familial match in both mine and my dad’s Ancestry DNA, and my cousin, who would be their aunt, also has a DNA test on there. I would assume that would be how the found out exactly how they were related to us . Families...

I’m also trying to organize my Ancestry DNA matches (there’s over 50,000. Lord help me) by hiding them all so I can take them out one by one and sort them into groups. It seems counterproductive, but it will be a lot easier for me to be able to do that than try to scroll through a never-ending list.

A lighter note: went to an after-Christmas sale last Sunday (literally the best way to stock up on body wash, shampoo, and conditioner!). Kind of a bust this year, because there weren’t any of the kinds we normally get. I did manage to get an E.LF. mini skin care hit kit (skin care products with hemp seed oil in them) so I have new products to test out!

You’re telling me ! The majority of the matches are distant, so whether I’m related to all of them (I think I read somewhere that there could be, like, coincidental matches or something like that) remains to be seen... in the next 50 or so years... .

A tree that combines two rather large families (my mom’s and my dad’s) that goes back several generations is bound to have a lot of people. I swear, family trees have made me so thankful for birth control and vaccinations/modern medicine.

Thank you! I hope it gets better, too!

I joined a thing on Goodreads where we have to read a book set in each state. One of the first states we’re doing this month is California. I stumbled upon Cut!: Hollywood Murders, Accidents, and Other Tragedies because I find this stuff interesting. (Back in high school, we had an assignment - I forget exactly what it was about - but we got to choose our own books. I chose one about unsolved celebrity mysteries and my friend chose one about Columbine. We checked out books out at the same time. I wonder what the librarian thought about us). Anyway, I had no idea Clara Bow had such a troubled childhood. I know that it’s unfortunately a pretty common backstory, but still. As a reader of Snopes’ urban legend archive, I’ve known about the unsavory and pretty sexist rumors surrounding her private life, but not much about her, or all the struggles she had in her later life. It’s horrible how someone can turn to entertainment as an escape, only for it to turn against them. This book said said one critic wrote she’d be better off dead! Also horrible to think how little things changed...

A few frustrations today. First, we had Subway for dinner. My aunt insisted on ordering online. I honestly need to take this job over because she apparently has no clue what she’s doing. My mom, both my aunts, and I usually get BMTs. I opted for a different sandwich, because the new recipe now means I actually taste the ham, which I do not like. Somehow, my aunt managed to get them BLTs instead of BMTs. How she didn’t notice the bacon at least when she put the toppings on, I have no idea. So glad I changed mine because, since I don’t eat bacon, I would have been without dinner. I mean, I could take the bacon off, but just... And why people don’t read the order back is beyond me.

The other frustration? My brother managed to lock himself out of his phone. Couldn’t get it unlocked, so we had to order a new one. It arrived around 7 last night, and we thought it would be super easy to activate it, so Mom called the company. Took about two hours to get it set up. We had trouble getting calls to go through. When we set it up, the new number (we had to get a new line) popped up twice: one was labeled primary and one was cellular data. They were both automatically turned on. One was showing signal, and I finally had the idea to turn off the other one. It worked. So it was something simple, but also how were we supposed to know to turn off something that came on automatically? I really do not like iPhones...

I did get to have some fun, though. While mom and I were working to set his phone up, I programmed my number under the name “God.” I’ve done this before years ago, to my dad, and I texted him. Dad came in with a look of utter disbelief on his face and said in the funniest voice ever, “God texted me!” Mom and I couldn’t keep a straight face. So when we finally got the phone set up and it was in my brother’s hand, I called him. The look on his face was so worth it!

I’d wanted to try adding some yoga or the Vivaspa Whole Body Vibration Machine into my day, but I felt pretty lightheaded and off most of the day, so I skipped it. Fonzie loves to chase me around the house. It is so adorable the way he runs/bounces after me. I do enjoy doing this with him because he’s just so precious, but it was so hard today when he wanted to play. I felt so horrible and dizzy during it. But he looks up at me with the sweetest little face and his little teeth showing because of his underbite. How can I resist? I mean, I really regretted it for a while but just... that face!

We had a busy day. Mom and one of my aunts left to go to the bank then pick up my other aunt’s china hutch. We’d “given” it to my cousins when we first moved because at the time we weren’t sure if we’d have space. We’d found out that they weren’t using it, and my mom had thoughts about getting it back and replacing the shelf and desk we were currently using. When we asked about it, we got asked where we’d put it, like it’s really any of their business, and we found out that it, along with my dad’s scooter he let my aunt borrow, were put in storage. I have issues with this for so many reasons, the main one being we don’t trust them to keep up payments on the storage, and our things could possibly be sold. Truthfully, I’m surprised they weren’t. My aunt had also stopped using the scooter a while back, and we were told several times that they were going to put it in my aunts truck and we’d get it back when she came over for lunch. This then switched to my cousins bringing it on a weekend. Neither one of these things ever happened, so finding out that it was in storage? Frustrating. Also, I have issues with people putting stuff that doesn’t belong to them in storage without asking the person it belongs to...

Anyways, while they were picking up the china hutch and the scooter, my other aunt and I were cleaning off the shelf and the desk. We’d saved this for the last minute because we didn’t really have a place to store extra boxes for an extended period of time. My aunt has limited mobility, so I moved the desk outside and the shelf into our garage by myself once they were cleaned off. My mom and aunt returned not long after and I made my mom eat since she hadn’t yet. Then we got the scooter out of the truck. My aunt who’d gone with my mom came out to help get the china hutch out. She made the decision that she didn’t want to risk moving it, even though with two people (my mom and my aunt) holding one end and me pushing the other we should have been able to get it out of the truck with a little maneuvering. So we were stuck until my brother came home at 2. By that time, I was already getting frustrated thinking of how long this process was going to take. My legs were hurting, and I just wanted to get things done before it got too late. My other aunt finally helped my brother and I get the china hutch into the living room after my brother and his friend moved it into the garage. Thankfully, it didn’t take all night, as I had feared, to put things away once it was settled. But I also found out that the aunt who went with my mom didn’t do anything while she was with her. And my brother? When asked if he could help carry two boxes, he practically threw a fit. So. Yeah.

I’d decided to leave one of the boxes for today, because it was getting close to dinner time. So I spent part of my morning unpacking the box with the intent on reorganizing everything throughout the week. My dad helped me get the old shelf upstairs. I had measured and thought it would fit into my attic. I didn’t think through getting it in my attic and pass the little strip of ceiling that it lower than the rest. Needless to say, it didn’t work . Oh well.

My brother came in to tell us Bob Saget died. Mom and I didn’t believe it so we looked it up, only to unfortunately find that it was real. We were watching TV and there was a breaking news feature. We didn’t think it would be about him, so my anxiety starts because I didn’t need something else on top of it. But it was about him. I didn’t fully realize until later that they had broke into America’s Funniest Home Videos to talk about him.

So I’ve lost three of my favorite celebrities in one month. I’d expected to be sadder than I was when Betty White passed. Bob’s death is hitting harder. I guess because I knew Michael Nesmith had heart problems (which did freak me out when I read about it) and with Betty living such a long and wonderful life, neither death was an incredible shock like Bob’s was. Even though mom and I did worry because he was looking similar to how John Ritter looked before he passed.

I think it’s pretty safe to say my entire house are fans of Betty and Bob, but there’s a little frustration over tributes. My mom was upset because they didn’t break in to announce Betty’s passing and I had to remind her that we weren’t watching normal television that day, so we don’t know for sure. My mom will also be upset if Entertainment Tonight (a show that I do not watch, even though I’m writing a short freaking story about some of my favorite celebs ) doesn’t do a thing for Bob like they did for Betty White (she got two full episode about her. We do believe she deserves all that and even more).

In short, a lot of deaths have happened recently (though only one was personal) and I’ve felt pretty numb through most of it. Maybe it’s a good thing this is hitting me so I can finally release some emotion I know has been pent up for a while...
