Rissa I always love the texture and the contrast. It’s beautiful, but very often overlooked.

The heather (struikheide) is in full bloom, purple hills all around. We saw a few sand lizards (zandhagedis) who are too fast for my phone’s camera, so the picture is a bit blurry.
Madame Chicken of the B&B and was very curious about the coffee drinking tourist laying in the grass. I guess it’s a Brahma chicken. She’s very friendly and curious and she and a few friends roam around in the garden.

Sif_Shepard NancyTree Rissa TopNotch Montserrat Thanks! I’ve been seriously thinking about keeping chickens in the backyard, only realising hours later that it would probably freak out the cat, who’s already terrified of blackbirds.

I have chickens, and I absolutely love them! I've got one cat that makes a game out of running to pounce on them and then run away, while the others just walk around them like, "Can't eat that, it'll eat me first!" Cats start out feeling a bit miffed by the "invaders", but they get over it. If you do get birds, and are worried about your cat, start with some bantams.

OJJJEM You got me looking into all kinds of chickens. I really like the Sebright, I remember our neighbours had those when I was really young. But still, I don’t think I should have chickens as long as my not-that-smart cat is around, especially because from what I read the chickens are most probably a lot smarter than the cat.

7,2 km hike, well, something like 4,5 near the B&B with my son in the morning and the rest in bits and pieces when walking around in a village we visited and such.

This is on the summit of the local mountain, a whopping 31 meters above see level. You might frown on that, but 31 meters is really something in this flat country. When running the often sandy paths going uphill and downhill in a quick succession, it’s enough to make you really sweat.

The intelligence of a chicken is in its ability to pick up on social habits. They also have a more extensive vocabulary than most people realize, though it's still relatively limited. The intelligence of a cat, however stupid it may be, is in its problem-solving skills. Cats, in general, are among some of the world's most capable problem solvers... Doesn't mean they're very smart, but combining that with their amazing reflexes is what makes them such capable hunters, overall. Basically, cats aren't smart, just clever, and chickens are stupid, but still smarter than we give them credit for being. Doesn't mean some birds or cats aren't just plain stupid... I had a smart dog a couple years ago from smart breeds, but at the same time, she pretty stupid... Such a trainable breed, yet literally couldn't be trained to save her life.

OJJJEM Fascinating how intelligence has so many faces. Thanks for the very informative explanation.

No Exercise of the day for me today. It’s 30 burpees. We’ve spent all day in an amusement park today and I can’t move a muscle anymore. We started at 10:30, left at 18:00, did almost all the rides and walked for just 4,1 km according to my phone. It feels like 25 km.

Home again! Our happy cat told us that he hadn’t really noticed us being away.
On the way back we visited Het Loo, a recently reopened royal palace (now state owned), restored to the 1685 state. The reconstruction of the baroque gardens started I guess about 25 years ago. They’re unique for the Netherlands. Best way to get a nice overview is from the palace roof.
