Thanks, DorothyMH! It actually wasn't too difficult of a hike from an elevation/terrain standpoint, but my husband and I stopped a lot to identify plants along the way! My husband especially has been getting interested in learning about native plants and edible wild plants. We learned recently that the Google Photos app has a feature called Google Lens, which can help identify plants in a photo. So, we have been using that as we hike to identify plants and flowers. It is quite fun!

Whirly, have you tried iNaturalist? I only use the website. But they have a smart phone app. It works initially via image recognition, like Google Lens. But the community of iNaturalist users then have the ability to review your submissions and either agree with your pick for a species or suggest something different. IDing is very accurate for things like birds (because there are many birders and therefore many photos for the software to learn from and also many experienced human eyeballs reviewing your submissions). But there are subject matter experts in other fields as well who review submissions to the site. (All of my submissions for butterflies, wildflowers, trees, and bees--plus a few other more specialized niches--get reviewed by professionals pretty quickly.) Plus the site will catalogue all of your observations for you. So you have a record of how many species you have observed, on which dates you first observed them, and where, etc. You can try your hand at identifying other peoples photos too, which helps you practise your own ID skills.

Rainbow Dragon, yes, I actually signed up for iNaturalist last year after you mentioned it (or linked to it) on your thread! I haven't done too much with it yet, but my husband recently heard about their phone app, so I downloaded it a few days ago to try out. I do like the idea of having a record of my observations in addition to just identifying them, plus it is pretty awesome that other users review/verify your identifications! If you are interested, here is my iNaturalist profile.
