    Day 764

    - Day 16 Daily Abs

    - Day 10 Spartan Trials

Combat Day. I'll have to rename these days because they're often not combat! Today, for example, I did a warm-up and then followed-along with Chloe Bruce's Dynamic drills for splits and then continued with her splits workout. I also did some balance drills because my balance is still quite rubbish. Yesterday when we did Koryo, I was reminded that I need to work on my double side kick, so I drilled that a few times each side. Perhaps this can be more like Drills Days - only that might remind me of the dentist...

Taekwondo general training. Oof, a hard day today. The GM said it would be, made it deliberately so, and yep, it was hard! When I write down what we did, it doesn't sound so hard, but it was relentless, non-stop, exhausting. Okay, so we had some drills to warm up. Five stations - two markers at each end; three witches' hats; two markers at each end (again); markers set out in zigzag pattern; three body-shields lain down. At the two markers, we had to hop, sideways, with the front leg up as though to kick, from one end to the other. At the other one, we had to use the other leg. At the witches' hats, we had to jump two-footed over them. Zigzag markers - run and tap with hand on outside of marker, zig to the next and touch, zag to the next, etc. At body shields, again, two-footed jumps with just one jump between. Each for 30 seconds before swapping. Phew. Partner up. One person held iranian at about knee-height, while other person skipped and kicked the pad. Twenty seconds then swap; ten seconds; finally five seconds, and count how many kicks you made. Barely time to get breath, we then moved onto the shields and cut-kicked for 30 seconds before swapping. Then again with other leg for another 30 seconds. Then back to the iranians with cut-kick. My cut kick is pretty good. After the two rounds of that, back to the body shields where we now did turning kick, two rounds, then back to the iranians to do spinning back kick. At least this gym has large fans so it wasn't so oppressive. We are finally getting some summer weather and this week is forecast to be around 30 degrees every day. So a hard training session but I didn't feel there wasn't anything I totally sucked at! My back kick wasn't bad so long as I took it slowly. I've been working on it. I just have to get consistent with it and then speed it up. I'll get there.

Push Day. When I'm doing a Pull Day, I reckon Pull Days are best, but when I'm doing a Push Day, well, that's just the bees knees! This morning started off peculiarly. I was doing the chest presses and thinking how weak I was feeling today because it was hard. Not impossible, just...hard. But I kept at it because it was only 2 sets of 10. Then I saw that I'd set the machine at one plate (4.5kg) heavier than I usually used for chest presses! No wonder. That made me feel pretty good, let me tell you. So I also increased the weight with the tricep pull-downs, and again, that was do-able. Everything else was the same.

Mastery training. We warmed ourselves up with a few laps of jogging, then got down to it with a few laps of walking stance with lower block (same leg, same hand), then a few laps of upper block. Followed by four laps of instep kick, with the GM insisting that all of us should get our foot at least level with our face. I have no problem getting higher than that (thank you, healed hamstrings!). Then we started with pattern 1. Twice. Then pattern 2, twice. Ditto, patterns 3 and 4 (er, how does 4 go?). A big jump right up to Koryo (pattern 9), but some people went outside (lucky them because it was so hot and stuffy inside!) to learn it. For me, it was, er how does Koryo go?! I got through it without error, though it wasn't very good. We did it again. Then we did it twice in our own time. That was it for tonight, and I was wet with sweat. Good stuff.

Skills Day. It is very humbling when you try to crawl along a balance beam on hands and feet and can't! I had to go to my knees which was much easier. This crawling on a beam is something that needs work! I like my Skills Day. There is something very freeing about having just one day each week in which to do absolutely anything. I like some structure; I like knowing what I'm going to be doing so that I don't waste my time wondering what I'm going to be doing, but this Skills Day is just whatever occurs to me. I try different brain-training apps (today I had a go at BrainHQ); wondered if I could do an L-sit using the yoga blocks (nope but I had a good try); went bug-identifying with the Lad (today's find was an orange Assassin Bug). The only problem is that I do a number of things and then forget what I did! I do remember that I kicked over the candelabra when I was practicing my back kick because I thought either that a) it was further away than it was; or b) my leg wasn't that long. Wonderful reflexes, though, and I caught it before it fell too far.

    Day 761

Combat Day. I guess my initial plan to do a combat workout has really changed. I have to be doing a jumping spinning back kick for Mastery. In general class we worked on the spinning back kick. Mine totally sucks. Even doing the darned thing slowly, I lack balance. Therefore, I have to take another step back (so to speak) and work on the plain old back kick. And that was today's task. Probably also tomorrow's and the day after's and... Once the back kick is good enough (I'd like to say perfected but I don't think I've got the time for that!), then I'll work on the spinning part, until finally we get to the whole jumping thing.
Walking. I realised I've been a bit slack logging this. You probably all think I'm still in Bute! But I finished those 21,300 steps, then took in San Francisco at 38,000, then went to the Isle of Cumbrae for a quick 21,300, and now I'm in Nepal (57,000).

It was a very exciting day today. Look!

So totally cute! Unfortunately, I did count my chickens before they hatched so got only three eggs. One went missing , one got broken , but one hatched!

Pull Day. As foreshadowed last week, I increased the weight for the hamstring curls. Each plate weighs 4.5kg so it's quite a noticeable change. The left leg took it in its stride, but the right leg - yikes! It was a struggle to get through each set but it was do-able and no particular ill-effects have followed. Definitely a Good Thing, then. That right hamstring obviously really needs it. I was surprised because I hadn't thought it was so much weaker than the left - a little, yeah, but not so much. I am pleased with it, though. With them both, really, considering that I've strained each of them over the last couple of years. I am particularly pleased with the left (the one that was damaged in 2020, so it's had longer to recover) because when I was doing instep kick last night, I was aware of how my knee was generally either near or at my shoulder, both at prep and recovery. If only I could get this range when I'm not doing a ballistic exercise! One day.

Arms and Legs Day. Much the same as last week except, instead of plank jacks, I did slider hamstring curls. Yikes, they really work those hammies!

Taekwondo general training. Warm-up was some running, including relays. Then we did some punches then another two laps of jogging. 20 pre-squats, a lap, 20 diver squats, 2 laps, etc. The GM wanted to work our quads today. Drills - jab, power (aka punch), cover, first standing in the same place, then moving forward and back. To complement this, we partnered up and used pool noodles as legs to kick the partner who had to block with the hand down low, or with the shoulder (kind of like a shrug) if the "kick" were high. The GM used me to demonstrate the shrug - nice to know I'm good at something! On to kicking - only ten each leg of instep, turning, and down. Finished off with more partner practice with back kick. One person held two paddles at waist height and the idea was to perform a back kick in such a way that the front paddle hit the back paddle. There were many contenders so it was hard to choose but I have finally concluded that back kick is officially my absolutely worst kick. And to have to add a jump to it... well, it's one of the seven circles of hell!

One of those days when something else takes priority and you spend the whole day doing it and feel absolutely exhausted at the end of it. It was supposed to be an arm-and-leg day today (not going well this week!) but that's been rescheduled to tomorrow - and I hope I can get finished what I started today so I can get to that!
Elite started back tonight. I'm not doing it this term. It conflicts with Mastery on Fridays and I wouldn't like to do only one class each week. Besides, it's probably best that I focus on Mastery right now. Perhaps next term.
