~ finished up my challenges for last month and started on 4 new ones. Three are from here that I've got some additions to make them a bit more challenging since I've done them before and my own cardio daily challenge.

~ I really LOVED the daily self-care checklist that several bees have been doing for awhile now -- TheLibrarian is the one that comes to mind first, but I know MamaTigerJ was also doing it so big thanks for the inspiration guys -- and I decided to start one of my own. Winter months aren't so great for me the last few years so I'm hopeful that this will help with some of those struggles and help keep me focused on simply progression not perfection. My daily list is a compilation of personal goals + things I've got on my bucket list with a focus on keeping my mental health going strong. I'd intended to start it January 1st, but that doesn't equal completion or consistency for me at all and since I was excited to get started I opted to begin December 1st instead!

    * I am going to post my art as weekly posts on my IG if any is interested though I am kinda the worst at social media I would love to connect with bees outside the Hive as well if anyone is down!

** I am currently focusing on 4 languages so I am splitting them up to one a week per month (7 days each). It looks like this: 1st week German, 2nd week Sign Language, 3rd week French (mostly vocab refreshing + writing focus as I can still understand and read quite well -- I am possibly gonna do the proficiency test next fall) and 4th week is Korean. I am doing Duolingo for these, but I have self-study workbooks for all languages + Rosetta Stone for all except Sign. Sign is also the only exception to the weekly restriction as my son, who is non-verbal ASD, is learning it too. So I am practicing + using it on a daily basis with him.

Things are crazy busy here lately and right up until the school Christmas break in a few weeks. My son is going through re-assessments from his Occupational Therapist (OT), his Speech Therapist (SLP) and is in the process of doing a general behaviour + development re-assessment for his general diagnosis (ASD + Global Development Delay) as well. The paperwork and meetings is kind of ridiculous, but I'm glad that we are able to get this all updated so we can build the best plan + strategies for him for best quality of life and overall successes in regards to development!!

I'm practicing daily for my blue belt test that is in basically three weeks and drilling with the other half since he started jits as well. He is (of course) completely loving it hahaha
Unfortunately I need to miss out at the club this week which really sucks as one of my friends + regular training partners had a positive Covid test this Friday She is feeling alright except for a very irritating cough thankfully (is fully vaccinated like myself), but I see her a lot and I trained with her for 2 hours on Monday and she started to feel like trash on Wednesday. So while I (and my family) feel fine, I'm not going to the club for the week just in case I am simply just not showing any symptoms. I don't want to be the reason anyone else could get sick! I was initally supposed to do my blue belt test on Dec 4th so I'm super glad that I opted for the 18th instead now that this has happened.

    Dailies
    D27 Daily Abs Challenge ~ 30 sec raised leg hold / 30sec rest / 4 sets
    D27 Cardio ~ 48 jumping jacks + 48 opp knee to elbow climbers / no rest / 4 sets
    D27 Daily Squats Challenge ~ 11 squats + 5 ct hold / no rest / 4 sets
~ solo jits drills + blue belt test practice

Ironheart Day 13 ~ 20lb DBs with bicep curls, 25b DBs with the shoulder press + tri exts and 17.5lb DBs with the rows

Arms of Steel Day 13 ~ 5 sets and did 30 reps for each exercise instead of 22 reps

Back + Core Day 13 ~ Yoga + addition poses for more flow

    ~ 11min mobility flow + 1min 35sec side splits finisher

    Hope everyone is doing excellent!!

    16.11.2021 ~ Part 2

I spent approximately 15 minutes before class drilling a few things I wanted to work on for my blue belt test with one the other blue belts. I think I may get this guy to be my partner for the test as we are so similar in size.

I was fortunate to get paired with one of the higher ranked blue belts, one of my favourite training partners, for the Mod 1 class last night and we basically treated the entire class like a Mod 2 instead. Easily the hardest "beginner" class that I've ever done and it was awesome We were both rocking about 75 percent resistance for our "drilling" aka light rolling. It was all stuff that we already know so we mostly worked through attack sequences if on top and bottom defended it. None of the just letting the takedown or the submission happen, we had to work for it!

The general gist of this class was: 1) clinch to coming around the back; 2) takedown to side control; 3) practicing dealing with guard pullers; 4) basically a lumberjack sweep with both ankles from someone standing up inyour guard; 5) high mount to armbar

Right off the bat we combined 1 + 2 and rotated the takedown and working the defense of it. Once at side control working a different submission each time with partner working defense. We both learned a super fun knee bar last week from someone coming around the back for a takedown and we both almost got it too. So fun!

Practicing the guard pulling is part of the Alliance curriculum so it was included mainly for that reason as well as just being prepared for when it happens to you so you don't slam them on the mat. 'Cause slams will get you disqualified in competitions under the IBJJF rules.

And we worked the sweep right to mount to whatever submission we wanted once we got there. An excellent class and it felt amazing to be with someone that knew their stuff so we got the maximum out of this class for our skill set.

    ----
The Mod 1 class I went to Monday evening I was paired with a one stripe white belt that has some great moves, but is suffering from the spazzy white belt syndrome I did get kneed in the face pretty bad from her when we were working a simple re-guard from turtle and that hasn't happened for some time. I think once she starts relaxing and stops worrying about her speed she is gonna be a force to be reckoned with especially coming from a muay thai background.

PS. This was the other halves first jits class and he enjoyed it a ton, not surprising, and he went back for last night's class as well

Not possibly to take any of that negative at all! Thank you for sharing and your kind words! My family is not engaged all that much to do with him unfortunately, there have been a few small changes for the better this year, but I have an incredible network of chosen family that gives me ridiculous amounts of support. My son and myself are extremely blessed to have it!
I think martial arts or combat sports are honestly one of the best things that anyone, sitting on the spectrum or otherwise, can be involved in because of the attention to detail, the structure, the regulation, the discipline and certainly the socialization aspect. There's something really wonderful about working with the same peer group on a move or a sequence over and over again that builds this kind of upspoken comradery. Truly, truly magical in how the consistency of it can change behaviours and demeanor over time.
I'm glad you've got this for yourself and you're amazing at it too!!

I know she is stoked as hell to walk away completely dominating it

And it is a lot of fun! My son is non-verbal autistic with a development delay and a year ago nobody could even touch him, not even me. Now he drills + rolls with not only me, but with 4 or 5 other people as well. BJJ is truly incredible, all of the magic, seriously. And the club we're at and all the coaches/teammates are truly amazing for putting in the work + patience with him.
I hope you eventually have a family to join you in your combat sports fun It's like the classes never end even when we get home!

I actually already do this as my head instructor comes from a muay thai and wrestling background before he started in BJJ. Thanks for the reminder though as I am planning on working a ton of back attacks this evening before class! I just need to channel my inner velcro monkey

It's awesome to get this fun blend of old school jiu jitsu mixed with the new, some sprinkly bits of muay thai, huge focus on break falls and plenty of judo as well.

Thanks man! Only got a few things to focus on: single leg takedowns, hip throws, butterfly guard (defense+sweep), side control chokes, attacks from the back. Feeling pretty confident about both my open guard and close guard sweep + passes, closed guard submissions, mount + side mount escapes, side control arm submissions, and mount attacks

~ The weekend was a touch busy with open mat on Saturday morning so my son could meet more of the coaches + teammates. He even did some mini rounds with two of the guys he just met, which is incredible! After that we had to hurry home for the first of several home meetings for his speech reassessment and that was a couple of hours. Sunday he was just a mess - completely dysregulated, wouldn't eat or drink, or engage in kind of anything - especially his body breaks, and just an odd amount of volatility that doesn't usually happen any more. Thankfully it didn't last until Monday and he was back to his "normal" self. On the weekend I did my dailies, indoor cycles, BJJ drills, and my mobility flow.

    Dailies
    D15 Daily Abs Challenge ~ 25sec raised leg hold / 30 sec rest / 4 sets
    D15 Cardio ~ 36 jumping jacks + 36 opp knee to elbow climbers / no rest / 4 sets
    D15 Daily Squats Challenge ~ 8 squats + 5 ct hold / no rest / 4 sets

Ironheart Day 1 ~ 15lb DBs on both the bicep curls + lat raises, 17.5lb DBs on the exts and 20lb DBs on the upright rows. Also, took less than 60sec rest most of the time.

Arms of Steel Day 1 ~ doubled the reps for all exercises

Back + Core Day 1 ~ Did each pair of exercises alternately and took no rest.
    10 bridges + 20 flutter kicks / non stop / 4 sets
    20 side leg raises (laying) + 10 opp arm/leg raises / non stop / 4 sets

    Indoor Cycle -- 3.1km / 8min 28secs
Ran out of time before I needed to leave the house this afternoon to do a longer cycle and I totally forgot about my mobility flow. I imagine that I'll be feeling that tomorrow!

BJJ (Gi) Mod 1 ~ I don't normally stay in town for this class since it requires me to hang in the city for four hours. But, kinda glad that I did as it was some good review of a few things that I hadn't used in awhile that I need to know for my test. This was also my other half's first BJJ class and he seemed to enjoy himself a fair bit!

-- single leg takedown with lion kill grip (worked both sides)
-- bridge to extension to escape from side mount to grabbing the legs and coming around to side mount (worked both sides)
-- choke from closed guard with the arm wrapped + deep collar grip and a lovely flare of the opposite elbow. I like this choke a lot!!

    11.11.2021 ~ Part Two

~ I ended up doing a neighbourhood walk + chase game with my son instead of either a run or a cycle for an extremely varied outdoor session. He tends to move either at a snail's pace or he is sprinting

~ I drilled through my closed guard attacks + sweeps, open guard sweeps, and attacks in mount as well as a quick once through of kesa side control threes from my blue belt exam sheet. The other half has decided he's ready to give BJJ a try starting Monday evening so I figured he can be my practice dummy if I wanna bang out a few reps of stuff here now that he wants to get into it!

~ more foam rolling and yoga for the lowerbody and side body -- approx 15 minutes in the evening

    -----

    12.11.2021

~ Sleep hates me apparently as I woke up early feeling completely broken and had an additional awful, restricting-my-movements pain in my left lat/neck area from things being cranked while I slept. Annoying Thankfully it started feeling loads better after I was up and moving about for about an hour or so and it seems fine now.

    Dailies
    D12 Daily Abs Challenge ~ 23sec raised leg hold / 30 sec rest / 4 sets
    D12 Cardio ~ 32 jumping jacks + 32 opp knee to elbow climbers / no rest / 4 sets
    D12 Daily Squats Challenge ~ 60 squats (30 single leg/30 split)

    Lifting ~ D5/Wk5 - arms / 30-60 sec rest / 4 sets
close grip db press - 10 reps with 37.5lb DBs
hammer curls - 12 reps each side with 20lb DBs
over tri exts - 9 reps each side with 22.5lb DB
zottman curls - 8 reps with 17.5lb DBs
tri kickbacks - 10 reps each side with 27.5lb DB
con. curls - 8 reps each side with 20lb DB

Last day of this lifting split and I'm glad I did the fifth instead of stopping it at four like I'd originally planned as I am pleased with my progress both rep and DB weight wise for most of it. I think I am doing Ironheart next, but haven't decided if I'll pair it with an add-on program or not yet.

    ~ Indoor Cycle -- 8.1km / 20min 18secs

~ 11min non-stop hip + hamstring + side body mobility flow and finished with 1 min 20sec side splits

~ started the morning off with some foam rolling - around 10 min or so - as my lower back and side body feel terrible thanks to the super soft mattress. I'm gonna try sleeping out on my mats tonight and see if I get a better sleep and/or wake up less broken in the a.m. tomorrow.

    Dailies
    D11 Daily Abs Challenge ~ 18 knee crunches + 18 reverse crunches / 4 sets
    D11 Cardio ~ 32 jumping jacks + 32 opp knee to elbow climbers / no rest / 4 sets
    D11 Daily Squats Challenge ~ 7 squats + 5 ct hold / no rest / 4 sets

    Lifting ~ D4/Wk5 - shoulder + core / 30-60 sec rest / 4 sets
db shoulder press - 8 reps with 27.5lb DBs
db lat raises - 10 reps with 17.5lb DBs
bent over flys - 10 reps with 20lb DBs
    leg raises - 20 reps
shoulder squeeze - 20 reps with 50+30lb bands
crucifixes + crunch kicks - 14 reps each
front raise - 13 reps with 50+10lb bands
flutter kicks + scissors - 30 reps each

~ 11min non-stop hip + hamstring + side body mobility flow and finished with 1 min 10sec side splits

Not sure if I am doing an indoor cycle or run yet and kinda hoping I can use whichever I do as a warm up before doing some drills. I think if the downstairs neighbour heads out then I'll do a short run, if not then I'll do a cycle so TBD.
