Alright a quick (ish) update for this past week...

I finished up a second week of my Upper-Lower Split and I honestly don't think I will continue with it until the of the end month partly because I am bored with it and partly because it's mucking with my workout schedule a bit. My leg day keeps falling on the same day as my evening BJJ class and my body ain't a fan of this situation at all and I've done so well at not skipping my least favourite workout day of the week. So I am dropping it for now and I plan to re-work my entire schedule as getting my long run in on the weekend is proving a challenge as well because of the nice weather/company/family stuff. Plus, there are a total of 5 class times for BJJ at my level that I could go to each week and I would like to get there at least twice a week, but my workout plan prevents this at the moment. So I will get this sorted this weekend, hopefully today!

As for BJJ this week, we worked on getting out of headlocks and then going for a choke, arm bar or a shoulder press...lock...twist (?? no idea what this would be called ) I worked with a 3 stripe blue belt for this class and he was amazing! Super patient with me and great at helping me problem solve around my height issues as this was again a bit of a challenge. Also, I was once again the only gal here and I definitely prefer this setup as he didn't go easy on me at all so everything I did, I actually did not because he "let" me but because I could do it. We finished the class with our partner picking whatever headlock or cinched grab without telling the other half and needing to identify + get out of it. I LOVED this because I got every one he threw at me and it means I get it

    ---

Marathon training is going well and I am slowly adding on the distance for my long runs. Massage therapy seems to be helping with random pain in my ankle. After I went the first time he pointed out that my right foot is slightly out turned when standing in a relax, normal posture and that would definitely account for pain on the outside edge of that ankle. My whole right side was tight as **ck and it was the most painful (and glorious) experience ever. I see him again at the end of the month for more!

    ---

Thinking I may do Hero's Journey again? It was like the second program (or something like this) I ever completed on here I believe so it's been a few years since then. It seems ideal as I could keep the exercises as body weight or add weights if I head out to the gym Thoughts? Suggestions?

I mentally don't want to do a full on lifting or body weight program as I've just done both recently, I need to get three runs in a week, and BJJ twice.

      OK new schedule is done

      Sunday ~ active rest: chill run/longboarding/bike ride/hike
Monday ~ full body + core
Tuesday ~ long run in the afternoon, distance increased each week. Once school lets out for the summer I'll attend the 7am BJJ class and then head to the gym with a friend
Wednesday ~ 9am strong pole class + 1130am BJJ class + recovery run if needed
      Thursday ~ upper body + core + 6pm BJJ
Friday ~ speed run (intervals) or run stairs
Saturday ~ legs + core [may occasionally hit the 10am BJJ class if time/schedule allows on the weekend]

I've slacked on the yoga big time and my body is definitely missing it. I will attempt to do a minimum 7-10 minute session before bed every night. This amount of time is nothing in the grand scheme of things and my body will appreciate even this small amount.

Alright I did Darebee workouts Friday and Saturday - core/posture and legs. And I finished up most of my planting on Saturday as well, save for a few things that need to go in the complex community garden. Only need to build an arbor in the back yard, get a couple buckets of river stone hauled in and seed a small section for grass and that space is done!

Sunday is back to being my rest day, which honestly feels awesome and I don't think I'll experiment with changing it around anymore.

        May 19th - Sunday

        chill, barefoot, indoor run ~ 4.46km / 24min 44secs / 5:32 per km -- Zombie, Run! Season 1 / Mission 21

        May 20th - Monday

        Hero's Journey ~ Day 1: Press "Start" to Play -- Level 3 / 200 reps each

Took as little rest as possible. Entire workout took me less than 20 minutes.

        side leg raises ~ 60/60/40/40
        squats ~ 50/60/50/40
        toe tap hops ~ 100/100
        climbers ~ 100/100

        Hero's Journey ~ Day 2: Stranger at the Crossroads -- Level 3 / 10 sets

I doubled up the sets each time so I did everything in 5 sets.

Karma Choice -> Option B: get involved

Total for the day: 600 points

I am starting my before bedtime yoga this evening!

On BJJ Val, I’m 6’3” and when I was an active practitioner in the martial arts, I hated sparring with people your size. They usually got inside my reach and either climbed me like a cat lighting up pressure points or hit hard and fast forcing me to retreat to try to reset the distance.
And one about your size paid me a great compliment saying I was a great uki after throwing me 4 or 5 times. “How?” I asked as I got back up and got into distance.
She replied, “When I say hit me, you aim at me and actually try to hit me.” Pause. “Hit me!” So I aimed at her solar plexus and went flying again. Wham!
“Plus, you know how to fall.”
It was a nice way to spend a Saturday.

Oh this made me chuckle and does sound like a fun Saturday I have found my size super helpful so far during the "sparring" games and I'm slowly starting to get used to compensating in other ways for my size when learning new moves. I am absolutely loving BJJ though and I definitely prefer rolling with the larger dudes than the random gals that do show up because of how hard I have to work to succeed. Very, very satisfying

              Hero's Journey ~ Day 3: Weapons' Practice

Heavy Sword ~ 3 sets to failure: 10-7-5 -- I had some twinge-ness in my right arm last week so didn't go to failure = 440 points
Hammer ~ 8 bicep curls + 8 bent over rows + 8 shoulder press / instead of 3 sets of each did all exercises as a superset with 15lb DBs = 50 points

              Bow & Arrow ~ 30 min total -- done = 200 points
              Ring ~ 20 sec full plank + 20 sec elbow plank + 20sec side plank -- did non stop = 100 points

              Walk (errands this afternoon) ~ 9.46k / 1hr 46min 32sec

Total for the day: 1490 points

                May 22nd - Wednesday

                Morning pole dance practice ~ 1hr 10min

Reviewed spins: cross ankle, momentum, reverse knee hook, front knee hook, advanced front knee hook, fan kick, pirouettes
Climbs/Sits (skin conditioning): basic pole climb, introduced side pole climb, pole sit (low-chair), pole sit (high -crossed) -- these hurt like hell!!

New spins: pencil and pinwheel -- both quite challenging

Next class in two weeks and the instructor wants to get me prepped for starting inverted spins/holds by the end of June.

Core Control Challenge D22 ~ 160 side leg raises (60/60/40)
Turned day's 23, 25, 27, 29 into one quick core workout. Also, doubled up the twists for each day and added 40 side bends to each day as well. The previous three weeks of this challenge I did over the last 2-3 days and I'll do the last 4 leg raises days on Saturday (leg day).

Hero's Journey ~ Day 4: Under the Stars -- core day and done with 5lb ankle weights on each leg (body armor)

                pt. 1 = 100 points + 50 points
                pt. 2 = 50 points

Total for the day: 1490 points

                  May 23rd - Thursday

Hero's Journey ~ Day 5: Through the Woods -- Level 3 / 10 sets **Keeping the dragon egg!
                  and
                  Hero's Journey ~ Day 6 / Pt. 1: Blocked Path -- Level 3 / 10 sets
                  Push-ups to failure: 25-23-21-19-18-16-13-12-10-10

I rotated through sets until they were all completed. I'll do the second part of Day 6 tomorrow along with running stairs or an interval run.

BJJ ~ Module 1 class this evening and honestly I'm still kinda pissed about it. Two other gals there tonight so the instructor put us all together to practice what we went through tonight. Now this would be fine if they actually put in some effort while doing the moves or they weren't more interested in chatting with each other. I had to be on them constantly about who was doing what for everything. They the only way they were taking me down on the first move was if I let them and because they put up ZERO resistance when I went for the choke/mount/take down everything I should've learned tonight isn't real solid in my head. I mean come on if someone is trying to pin you to the ground and/or choke you out, you aren't gonna just lay there like a dead fish and take it I have my fingers crossed that this never happens again as I don't imagine it is real cool of me to request not to roll around with a specific someone. I imagine I looked like I was forlornly looking around at everyone else getting a solid class in while I suffered through these chicks chitter-chatting....

On a much more exciting note!! I got my gi tonight

~ 15 min restorative yoga via Down Dog app

                      Nice gi

Sorry to hear that the girls in class were not taking training seriously and thus sabotaging your learning process. Things like that can really be frustrating. I've met people like this in Aikido seminars -- they were only putting in 20% of effort, making it impossible for their partners to learn. It's just annoying

val.lavigne86 bummer about your fellow students. Weird that they weren't focused. But then I was weird - I'd drive 200+ miles for lessons for workshops and lessons.
Also, I just couldn't see Mr. Westmoreland, Mr. Page, or any other of my instructors or senior belts putting up with that in their classes.

It certainly is annoying. I don't get why anyone would pay for stuff like this (classes or seminars) and not come with like tunnel vision-like focus to absorb as much as possible. Some people it seems, eh? Hopefully less of it in our futures!

I am typically the only gal at this Mod 1 class so I don't see it happening all that often thankfully. I'll be able to hit up the mixed level classes in the A.M. soon so that'll basically eliminate this entirely as there is literally only one higher ranked belt female at this place and she competes. So I know not only will I have to work my ass off but she will also probably wipe the floor with me

I thought it was odd too considering the cost of membership a month and the time wasted if not learning when there. I don't think either of them are in this for the long run so I imagine that has something to do with the lack of focus. I would love to compete eventually and I have limited time in my week because of my kiddo so I need to utilize each class to it's utmost when I get to one. As mentioned above I don't think it'll happen again or, at least, all that often. I will bring it up with the instructor if something like that (idle chit chat) happens again regardless because I don't enjoy wasting my time. In any case, looking forward to class this week in my new gi and fingers crossed I get to roll with one the dudes
