Went hiking with a friend one day this week! It was awesome! We went to a couple of locations in between where we live (so one person did not have to do all the driving). This is still within my local biozone in terms of species present, but the parks we visited were both new to me.

We managed to get lost in this one:

(It was all good though, thanks to this photograph I had snapped of the park map, and a GPS app on my friend's phone.)

Both places we visited were pretty open (wetlands and prairie habitats, with not a lot of tree cover). This made for a hot day of hiking, but also made it easy to see some great wildlife, including:

A couple of baby White-tailed Deer:

Thoughts: I think I can fix much of the above with a little gamification of my life. I will expand on this idea in a new post.

Lovely photos, we have quite a few of those butterflies in my area, so pretty! It's hard to catch the light just right on their wings so that the silver shines though

Trbrat75 the Great Spangled Fritillary is listed as common for my area. But I have only seen them a few times. (Could be I just don't search in the right habitat often enough.)

I will share some of my pics, to be sure they are the same butterfly, I believe they are. They are so pretty, about a month ago there were a lot in the field in front of my house.

                            Gamifying My Life

I have been having way too much fun lately. I say "too much" because the fun is getting in the way of getting things done that I want to get done. I do things that I enjoy and that I do not want to eliminate from my life completely. But it is definitely possible to have/do too much of a good thing. I need to practise moderation better.

Things I want to do more of:

                            1. push-ups
                            2. pull-ups
                            3. ornithological studies
                            4. nature journalling
                            5. Fluenz French lessons
                            6. pressing (handstand training)
                            7. yoga flows & dancing
                            8. running
                            9. artwork
                            10. checking in with you lovely Bees here in the Hive
                            11. keeping in touch with distant friends via writing letters

Things I want to moderate better:

                            1. playing games
                            2. watching English language television (movies, videos, Netflix, etc.)
                            3. eating cheese
                            4. eating chocolate

One of the things I have been doing too much of lately is playing board games. Some of my favourite games involve a mechanism by which one must invest in gathering resources which can then be spent to reap rewards. Utilising this mechanism I have developed a new game:

                            1. For every 20 push-ups and 5 pull-ups and 1 check-in with a Bee I may play 1 game of Azul or 1 round of Rolling Realms or 1 other game of similar (<10 minutes) duration.
                            2. For every 1 chapter of my Ornithology course and 1 letter written I may play one game, up to a maximum duration of 3 hours.*
                            3. For every 5 nature journal entries with sketches and 1 letter written I may play one game, up to a maximum duration of 3 hours.*
                            4. For every Fluenz French lesson and 2 check-ins with Bees I may watch one episode of an English language program, up to a maximum duration of 60 minutes.
                            5. For every 5 minutes of work on handstand training I may eat one portion of cheese.** (Nachos count as two portions. Pizza counts as one portion if I eat a salad with it, but two portions if I eat it without salad.) Five handstands = 1 minute of work. Five handstand push-ups = 1 minute of work. Work on other arms balances, and dedicated core strength training = handstand training. (Pressing = core work!)
                            6. For every 60 minutes of yoga flows or dancing I complete I may eat one portion of chocolate.** One portion = 3 scones or 1 pancake or similar. Unsweetened chocolate (i.e.: cocoa powder, cacao nibs) or chocolate sweetened only with whole fruit (i.e.: black bean brownies) is cost exempt.
                            7. For every 30 km I run I may choose any one of the above rewards (provided I can pay the associated Keeping In Touch tax).
                            8. For every 5 hours of work on art I complete (not counting the nature journal sketches, which are tracked separately) I may choose any one of the above rewards (provided I can pay the associated Keeping In Touch tax).

I may need to adjust some of the above numbers, but I think this will be a good place to start.

                            * Gaming with sleep_twitch and 'rin is cost exempt since the social aspect of gaming with friends adds value to these experiences. (Plus, Twitchy and rin are better at balancing work and play than I am and don't allow our joint gaming sessions to get out of hand.) Once I am able to game with friends face-to-face again, such gaming will also be cost exempt.

** Food eaten at dinner parties is cost exempt. (See the above note re: the value add of social experiences.) Everything in moderation, including moderation.

I will be tracking my game statistics here.

                            Let's see how this goes!

                            Comment

The game idea seems cool, i really like everything that can make exercise more personalised and fun as such all the best to you for your new program!
