    daejamurrachan thank you.

Our family physician is a good guy. He's never told me anything about my own health I didn't already know. And most of the time I cannot even get in to see him. (The gatekeepers at his clinic prioritize appointments based on their perception of who has the greatest need, and they apparently believe I am the healthiest person in town.) But he takes good care of my father. And he actually communicates with other healthcare providers who provide services to my father and helps us to navigate the system.

I'm not sure that she loves it yet. But she is definitely giving it the old college try.

Friday, January 1 - Rainbow's Consecutive Days of Fitness Day 254

running: 3K in 18:34 - Tulip Tree Trail - My first run since the flare up of bursitis, so I took things easy. Everything felt fine.

Workout with my mother: Day 288

          Posture x 3
          Fireheart - Day 6
Knee Saver (with dragon adds + mods)
          Sore Feet x 2
          Wrist Pain
          Hand Tendons x 2

          Total time for w/o w. mother: 48:15

          Total workout time: 67 minutes

          Other stuff:

          6.3 km hiking

I made it out to Rondeau for my run and a short hike. The day was overcast, so not great for photography. Air temperature was slightly above freezing, so the woods were quite pleasant, but wind speeds over 30 kph made the beach and other open areas feel quite chilly.

Our winter has been so mild thus far, Lake Erie is still completely ice free, right up to the Rondeau peninsula shoreline on the lake side:

waves roll into shore on a grey and windy winter day

The sheltered Rondeau Bay, however, is mostly frozen over, as are the sloughs, such as this one on Tulip Tree Trail:

a frozen slough in the middle of a forest on the Rondeau Peninsula cuspate sandspit, January 1, 2021

When I arrived at Rondeau, I first hiked Tulip Tree Trail as a warm-up for my run. There weren't a lot of birds around in this area of the park, but I did see a couple of downies, 3 cardinals, some gulls, ducks, and house sparrows, and 1 blue jay. I heard a black-capped chickadee scolding near the Visitor Centre, but was not able to locate it visually. I also heard but could not see a Pileated Woodpecker. Later, when I was running, the Pileated flew through the forest right in front of me! After my run, I got my camera and walked along the road towards which I had seen the bird heading, hoping for another sighting. I was soon rewarded! The lighting conditions did not make for good photos, but I at least got some ID shots. This beauty is a female.

AnnieW Anek I love the Pileateds too! Not only are they magnificent to look at. They are also quite industrious. Pileateds are our largest woodpecker, and they drill some impressive holes. These are primarily to provide food and shelter to themselves and their offspring, of course. But many of our birds are secondary cavity nesters that rely on natural cavities or vacated woodpecker holes for their own nests. Woodpeckers are pretty important to the bird housing market!

running: 4K in 21:59 - Rondeau Road. The trails were slick with mud this day and the boardwalks wet and slippery. So I stuck to a paved road for my run.

skill & strength training: 15 seconds - did a few kneeling clap push-ups because my mother wanted to know what they were

I can just hear the (mom)bellyaching about the FireHeart workouts. So many kudos to you for continuing that project! You must either have super thick skin, or you wear ear plugs that your hair covers up Either way, your mom will live a lot longer because of your tenacity in getting her moving

Thank you DorothyMH . There is some bellyaching, for sure. But I have to give my mother props for giving Fireheart a try. In addition to her physical limitations, my mother has some significant age-related cognitive decline which makes it challenging for her to learn complex exercises. Ten months ago she was griping about the exercises in a point five level program (Vitality). And now she's tackling a Level 3 martial arts program. We've done all the Fireheart workouts thus far on Level III too!
