Hummingbirds, i love them so much '! I had a few visitors last year at the bird feeder (i mean the one made for them) but this year, even if mine is out since beggining of May no visitor this year Maybe i'm doing to much things in my backyard, too much modification and work so it's not as peaceful that it should be.
The ruby-throated is the only species we have in the Eastern part of north America, my parents wanted to travel "coast to coast " this spring to go in British Columbia to see the others species during migrarion (like the Anna hummingbird for example) but everything was canceled.

Last thing (a bit late) I saw that you made a Daily dose of nature on the Peregrine Falcon. At my university a few years ago they installed a nesting site for them since they saw regularly Peregrine flying around. They now use the nest and they have a live camera following them 24/7 ! Here's the link for people interested :

      http://www.fauconsudem.com

(main page of Website in English and French, live video at the bottom of page)
mostly the rest of the website is in Frenxh and thwir Facebook page is also mostly in French, but on the Facebook they sometimes put like the interesting moment of the day like feeding or any events that the camera caught. This year they had 3 eggs but unfortunately one of the chick didn't survive the first days.

May 29 Daily Dose of Nature

Today's colour is blue, and our bluest of blue birds, bluer than the birds we call "bluebirds" and bluer than the birds we call "bluejays" is the Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea).

Male Indigo Buntings in breeding plumage are bluer than the sky.

Speaking of the blue of the sky: Indigo Buntings (like all other blue birds) have no blue pigments in their feathers. They appear blue due to microscopic structures in their feathers that refract and reflect blue light (just as the sky appears blue due to airborne particles in the Earth's atmosphere which scatter blue light).

It's only the male birds who get the brilliant plumage in Indigo Buntings. The ladies, as is the case with so many birds, are brown.

          (Juvenile birds are also brown.)

The male doesn't get to keep his brilliant hue year-round either. Males in non-breeding plumage are a mottled patchwork of duller blue and brown.

I photographed this bird on August 9 last year. He's still mostly blue, but you can see some darker feathers coming in on his face where the moult into non-breeding plumage usually begins.

This next bird was photographed just a week later:

He's a little duller, and his head is starting to look quite funky. The males can look pretty odd when they're mid-moult!

Female Indigo Buntings moult twice a year, at the same time as the males, but they just get fresh feathers of the same colour.

That's very blue indeed! I didn't know that blue isn't actually blue but just a light play. 😊 thanks for the fun fact!

The Male Indigo Bunting is wonderful! Thanks for the fact about the structure of his feathers. Interesting as always.

Myrvina thank you for the link to the nest cam. I watched the nestlings squabble and jockey about for position under the parent's warm belly just now as I ate my dinner. So cute, those nestlings! So patient the parent! It looks cold and windy there, but the parent is trying hard to keep both babies warm.

I hope your hummingbirds come back. I have found here it can really vary from year to year what birds we get, and even from week to week. Birds I know are nesting in the neighbourhood will be all over our feeders one week and then the next I won't see them at all. There are a lot of food sources for them out there right now.
