Today was not great...it sucked ass actually so the only workout was a lot of walking

I woke up to my husband telling me our cat, Simba, looked like he was missing an eye. I'm sorry, what?! Hes not been himself for a week or so and I hadnt seen much of him at all(normally if I am in bed, he is snuggled up next to me). There are times when he kind of goes off and does his own thing so, while I noticed I hadnt seen him much, I didnt think a whole lot of it. I had seen him the day before, and was looking at him, but he had his head turned so I dont know if his eye was messed up then or not. Anyways, after going and checking him out he did indeed seem to be missing an eye or something was definitely goin on, it was gruesome looking. But i saw no marks like he had been in a fight, there was no blood or scratches on him at all. W. T. F. After watching him I was pretty well convinced he may be dying.

I called the local vet(i havent been to this one, but they are the closest) only to find they were open by appt only...sigh. Called another vet, they wouldnt even see him, said I needed emergency vet services because it sounded like he was going to need surgery...fuck...so I called and the ER vet was booked but said they would work him in. They are still doing the drop off service there, so i dropped him off then went to the local grocery(where my daughter just happens to work). It wasnt long before they called me to tell me he had not actually lost his eye, he appeared to have an abscess but they couldnt tell if it was from a scratch or from a tooth possibly breaking and getting infected. Since he didnt like them messing with him they were calling to ask if they could sedate him. Of course, at this point they wanted a form of payment as well...awesome. I was still trying to figure out how exactly I was going to pay for it. My MIL gave me $100 but that was cash and they wanted more than I actually had on me. Credit Card, sigh...have been trying not to use these but oh well.

So they tell me that it could be several hours before he would be ready for me to pick him up, so i had lunch with my daughter and took the groceries back home and waited for the next call.

It wasnt what i was expecting. I could hear it in her voice before she even said it, hell if I am being honest I sensed it before she said anything, because she hesitated for one second. I thought maybe I was overreacting(I mean, i totally do that) but no. The prognosis wasnt good. He actually had a mass on his eyelid(or somewhere around there, i was in a bit of shock). Basically even if they removed the mass it would probably come back. They would also have to remove his 3rd eyelid and he would need to have medicine 3 times a day for the rest of his life and be a strictly indoor cat. But even if we did all that, the mass would probably return. So i had a hell of a decision to make. I made the difficult decision to put him to sleep. They wanted to know if I wanted to wait until the sedation wore off and be there, or if I wanted them to do it while he was still sedated. I told them not to wait, I didnt want him to wake up and then be put to sleep, that seemed unnecessary. I bawled...this cat drove me crazy. I had a love/hate relationship with him...and now I miss him and I feel wretched.

Next decision was to cremate or bury. I chose to bury him on our property. They provided a nifty heavy duty cardboard coffin. Much better than another vet that after our puppy had a bad reaction to his vaccination shots, had to be put down and they wouldnt let us go back with him while he was euthanized, they just met us at the backdoor and gave him to us wrapped in a bath towel. I was pissed.

Anyways - here he is, he was a gorgeous kitty

My dog, Stubby, had a weird thing going on with this cat lmao. That middle photo is pretty much how he slept with me every night. He had to be touching me, preferably(to him) my stomach or chest area

My workout today was digging my cats last resting place. There is a lot of creek rock where I buried him, so the first hole, next to the puppy i spoke of before, didnt work out. 2nd attempt I had better luck and was able to work around the rocks i did run into. During the dig it decided to pour down raining so i had to scramble to get the hole covered so it didnt fill up with water. Luckily my son had bought a stupid emergency tent and had tried to pitch it down there, which didnt work out. So I'm glad his failed attempt was still hanging off the tree close to where I was. It worked perfectly, the hole stayed dry. Now I have some cored concrete stones sitting on top as a marker which I think i am going to fill with dirt and plant flowers in as a memorial. Once I get that done I will post a picture.

*also the walk down to where I buried him is pretty steep coming back up so the half a dozen or so times I walked down and back up wore me the fuck out.

today I ran. I ran to the neighbors and back to my house, twice. The third time, I ran over and walked back. We were having a cookout for a friend and I had to keep taking things over to where my husband was cooking the chickens. I could've drove, but it was a perfect opportunity to get in a workout.

My greatest sympathies. Putting down an animal is just absolutely brutal.

I had an aunt (she's still alive, just a toxic person whom we no longer speak to) who had a cat with diabetes. This cat had to have regular injections, could never be left alone, and didn't want to interact with anyone - even her! So she was definitely keeping that cat alive for herself. That situation has given me the strength to put down two cats who were just suffering otherwise.

Floofy pup. May he make this moment a little brighter. (And wetter; he kisses and nibbles!)

That sounded like hell to go through, but in all sincerity, I think you made the right decision. He was a beautiful cat.
