    April Challenge (Tricep Dips) and lower back pain.

    Hi everyone,,,
    first let me just say that this website is sooooo great.
    i always start exercising but get bored really fast with having to do the same moves over and over again but on Darebee that's not a problem since each day i have something new to do.

    So I started the April challange and so far i was doing fine but today I felt some discomfort on my lower back while doing the dips.
    I have struggled with my lower back for quite some time now because of my hyperlordosis.
    do you think i should stop doing the dips or maybe i was just doing them wrong?!?!

    Maybe you injure,and I do not know if this is related with the hyperlordosis.
    I do the chair rows challenge with no problem (I move only the upper body,because it seems difficult for me to move all the body),maybe to do this challenge first, your back to be stronger .

      Hello SukiBoo , and welcome!

      The tricep dips can sometimes be blamed for pains in the shoulders or near the sternum, but as far as I'm aware, usually not in the lower back.

      Just to get a clearer picture, how far had you been into the triceps challenge when you started feeling pain in your back? A full week? Less than that?
      Also, have you noticed the same kind of discomfort while doing other exercises? And do you already do specific movements or exercises aimed at strengthening your back?

        the pain started yesterday, that is day 7 of the challenge.
        To correct my hyper lordosis, I was advised to strengthen my back and chore muscles which I have been doing for the last 9 months and it has tremendously helped with the pain.
        This pain was kind of new, it wasn’t in the middle of my lower back but rather at the sides. it was definitely a muscular pain, so I figured if it was working my muscles maybe it would be good for me in the long run .

          Usually, when doing tricep dips you would want your body to hang "loosely" below your center of mass, with your arms being the only support. This way when you move up and down your center of mass lies directly in the plane of movement which is ideal because you need very few other supporting muscles to stabilize the motion and you can isolate the triceps.

          Now obviously this is not possible when you do tricep dips on an edge - because, well, there's an edge in the way . When doing it this way your feet will be in front of you on the ground and the center of mass is somewhere in between your feet and the edge, roughly where your bottom is. This leads to your bottom wanting to "hang" down. In this case it's not a bad thing, you can let your bottom or your legs sag down as much as you want as long as they don't touch the ground (as they are the weight you want to hold and lift with your arms). But naturally we tend to stabilize our torso and lower body which then engages your core, which consists of your abs and lower back. This most likely why you engage your lower back.

          If the strength in your arms is unbalanced (which is very common) you will move up and down unevenly, leading with one side over the other, which leads to a slight twist of your torso, which in turn leads to your core being engaged unevenly - hence you feeling the sides of your lower back.

          I'm not saying this is definitively what is happening, but I can imagine it being a very likely cause for what you're experiencing.

            I think I was using my back muscles to come back up. Now I release them completely and I feel less pressure in the area.

              SukiBoo, being able to recruit the relevant muscles while allowing the ones you don't need to relax is a skill indeed. It's nice to hear you've been able to make progress.
