    Eating to gain strength

    neilarey do you have any meal plans that are geared towards strength gains? If not, could you please make one?

      Kakarot hi, strength or size? They don't necessarily mean the same thing.
      Modern Hero and Power Fast will both work for strength but for mass you need something like Mass Effect with higher protein content and regular re-fueling. You will also need to focus on strength workouts and, highly recommended, pull-up work and weights.

        Thanks Kanary but muscle is not the goal. neilarey just strength, brute strength. I have a new goal for after the 100 challenge (and it's borderline crazy) so I would like something that is good for calisthenics strength.Thanks.

          This made me think of Bruce Lee. You wouldn't think it by looking at him... but he was so freakishly strong. Where did all that power come from? He had tendons of steel so he had complete control over his body. He did bodyweight, martial arts, free-weights and stretching to achieve that. Together, it created an incredibly strong body but it did not add size. It was a perfectly optimized system. You can't do the same thing with a body that has a lot of mass. Having mass has its own advantages, it's just a very different goal.

          We were just talking about it in HQ. So you have person A and B.
          Person A does isolated exercises using specialized gym equipment. Person A looks like a mountain and is very strong.
          Person B does circuit training and free weights. Person A doesn't look that strong.
          Person A will be able to lift a lot heavier load on a leg press than person B. Yet Person B will lift a lot more with free weights. We put that to a test recently and it was confirmed.
          Person B is also likelier to win in a fight due to better tendon strength and overall body control.

          And then it all comes down to tendon strength... it's like wires running through your body. If your tendons are weak and untrained, the mass you carry will be diminished as your body is not working in sync.
          If your tendons are strong and well maintained, you leverage the muscles you have and you are really, really strong. Bruce Lee strong.

            Kakarot right. Then the Modern Hero will work, half of the team is using it for strength and maintenance. Muscle Mass is super difficult to maintain because our bodies are hardwired for optimization. You constantly need to damage, refuel and rebuild. Strength on its own doesn't need that much attention food-wise - you just need to be well fed and make sure you get enough protein on the regular. I am sure there are a lot more detailed diets out there where you measure all the macros - we just don't do it at DAREBEE. We feel that food has to be enjoyed, even if you are on a fitness journey and you have goals to reach. It should be managed but not to a point where it's just numbers to you. None of us knows how long we have on this planet so we should be kinder to ourselves

                Kakarot not specifically, no, but we are working on a couple right now. They will be up very soon. We are even thinking of bringing out a program.
                In the meantime, you can do a push-up plank hold. It's a very simple but super effective tendon strength exercise. Hold it for as long as you can (to failure), rest for up to 30 seconds and repeat 3 times in total.

                You will probably regret it but it'll be your gift to your body All tendon strength work is painful as hell because most of us need to work on a lot more.

                      Oh my god this exercise is freaking murder. I tried it during the push up challenge.

                      I look forward to a tendon program! Thanks for your posts here neilarey Good information. Do tendon exercises increase your speed as well? Bruce Lee is super fast. Does strength contributes to speed?

                        kandy Stronger muscles generate more force and it gives you more speed so yes, absolutely! Strong tendons is what gives you functional fitness. You get stronger and faster simply because your body is working as a whole and it's not fighting itself. Weaker tendons simply can't support the muscles so your performance suffers. Now, iron tendons.... damn, that's how you unlock all that power.

                          To be fair, all of us work tendons on some (granted, very poor) level - especially with DAREBEE circuits
                          But there are two things:
                          a) if you are wondering why a big guy can't move too well = weak tendons that cannot support all that mass. For some reason we see it a lot more often around us now. We see all these big guys that seem to posses incredible power... and yet, they can't do push-ups or jumping lunges or anything too functional. All that incredible hulk-like strength but it's all locked in there.
                          b) none of us are working tendons enough because it's freaking painful but that's exactly what we need to do to unlock our full potential. We are all basically handicapped at this point.

                          Now, excuse me, I am going to go do some tendon work I hate so much

                              kandy heh... every day As often as you possibly can. Tendons are very difficult to build up, every gain is super painful and slow in coming but on the bright side, you don't lose is as quickly as muscle if you don't do anything for a long while. the best thing I ever did for my fitness is work on my tendons. You can lose muscle, put on weight but having stronger tendons make bouncing back so much easier.
