Idea / suggestion for programs

Hi,

I am new to both this platform as well as the majority of its excercises. Therefor I often need to look up how to do a certain excercise (correctly). At first I thought I could click on an excercise to view the instruction. But that ain't possible because it is one big image. I understand that chopping up all these images and re-upload them, formatting them with html to align properly etc. is a hell lot of work. But I thought using image maps would be an easy method to get this workflow. I made one in a few minutes, for one of the programs I currently follow. Which I wanted to share as an explanation to those savy with html.

This code makes all excercises from the following image clickable and direct them to the associated instruction video's. Theoretically it would also be possible to show the video when hovering over the excercise but that is a little bit more set-up work.




I am really curious what you all think of this idea.

I think it looks like a great idea, but like many great ideas on this site, it takes the limited resources of our beekeepers away from what they do best: Developing and testing new, exciting programs and workouts.
Maybe a beginner gains a bit speed at the start and it's more convienient in the first month or so, but believe me, pretty much all people can remember a couple of simple movements, when they see the picture associated with them.
There are 1400+ workouts in the database. Not counting the programs and challenges. That's a huge workload for something that takes 'a few minutes'. That's 3 weeks if you count a 40/h week and 5 minutes/image, for the workouts only. Not talking about testing and debugging, people still find typos is old workouts and programs. It would just add another source for error and the convienience effect is negligible. Three weeks better spent on what this site does best.
That's just my 2 cents.

I understand your pain of implementing such feature. I am not aware of how dedicated the communnity is over here. But I thought that something like could be tackled easily with some peoples help. I made a demo/prototype Firefox plugin which allows the user to do this more easily. It is not (technically) working, but there is no technical limitation of this not being possible. I just did not spend more time on it to develop it further cause the full development would probably take half a day to develop, which is 3.5 hours more. Of me manually searching videos.

It is something which we have thought about before. I think Andi64 beautifully illustrated the constraints of time that we face when developing resources for this site. Because time is really at a premium we always look for what will deliver the most godo to the greatest number of people. With this in mind we also have to think about the technical difficulties. Browser technology is changing on an almost daily basis which means that maintaining image maps and the way different browsers render them for different users is an on-going task. Even when we use the latest HTML5 techniques there is no guarantee that we cover every browser equally and that's before we go into mobile browsers with some of our, arguably, most in-need, users having either no access to the image map or having a very poor end-user experience as a result.

DAREBEE's core philosophy rests upon accessibility. To achieve that with our current resources we had to shelve the image maps idea. Nevertheless, I want to thank you for taking the time to think about it and for creating this thread in the first instance.

Hi Damer,

Thank you for looking into the suggestion and the provided feedback. I understand and respect the decision. I do not fully agree with the technical & accessibility arguments. But opening up the discussion about that, would be counter-productive. Since the real problem is not in the technical or accesible side. But in the amount of available time and resources.

So if there will be any time (or resources) available in the future. Know that I would like to help with such a feature or about thinking/developing features to speed up certain processes.

I had just made a similar suggestion in another thread, but it seems this suggestion is more thoroughly discussed here already.

One thing I would like to add here, is that the image map approach is not really required to make this feature usable. Having a small list with links (possibly collapsible) below the exercise image would already provide a lot of utility, the added gain of using an image map is IMHO only small.

That still leaves the problem of a lot of manual work for this, I guess.

I originally thought that maybe each workout page would be somewhat autogenerated from metadata, and it would be easy to just autogenerate a list of links for each workout, but I am now under the impression that each workout is mostly just a separately layouted webpage, which explains why this would be a lot of extra work.

Damer - would you guys mind if I made a blog called something like "PlainText-Darebee" and clearly indicated that I am NOT part of Darebee, and that I am not guaranteed to be as up to date? I would list the date I accessed the workout, and include a link to the real Darebee Page. But it would allow non-image-focused people (learning disabilities, low vision or blind) a way to access the workouts.
