    [ DB - 5 December 2018 ] Self Doubt

    Self Doubt

There is a voice, deep inside our head, that works to undermine us. It knows all our weaknesses. It remembers every time we failed. It has a record of every vulnerability we have. Each time we try something that voice is there, quiet, insistent, sowing doubt. We are never quite ready, never good enough, never sufficient for the task at hand, it tells us. It's a voice that wants us to fail because it is a voice that has prepared all the reasons that explain why we failed.

Here's the thing: that voice, perversely, is designed to safeguard us. Everything we try is uncertain. Uncertainty generates fear, fear produces anxiety. The voice that holds us back is designed to reduce our anxiety. Self-doubt is designed to hold us back from tackling the saber tooth tiger alone, from attempting the 10ft jump across ravines, from setting out on our own across the mountains. The things we have to do today however are nowhere as catastrophic in their effect, so the voice that's designed to help ensure our long-term survival is now holding us back from discovering our full potential.

Nailing that job interview, moving to a new town, starting a new job or asking out a person you really like are not life-threatening situations. So, listen to the voice. It is there for a reason. But once you've acknowledged it also remember who you are, what you can do and that failure is not going to kill you. Overcome self-doubt by acknowledging it is part of you and balancing it with the need to continue your journey of self-improvement.

The voice of my self-doubt is the loudest. I am glad I am not the only one.

I needed this today. I reached out to someone who I am interested in and invited them to an event I'm doing. Still haven't heard back from them and the anxiety/self-doubt/little voice in my head have spent a lot of time telling me why I shouldn't have reached out. I needed the reminder that I'm okay and to be confident and even if they don't respond it doesn't matter. Here's to changing my mindset!

I am absolutely in love with these daily boosts.

The best thing about self-doubt is using it against itself, not only to do whatever the voice said you couldn't do, but to make a bigger effort that allows you to achieve even more than what you expected you could.
